How a holiday island bar boss died is a mystery, an inquest has been told.
The medical cause of Josh Clayton's death on the Isles of Scilly was "unascertained" pathologist Dr Russell Delaney told the inquest in Plymouth.
Mr Clayton's body was pulled from the sea off Tresco 10 days after he went missing on 13 September 2015.
Dr Delaney said there were no signs of drowning or an attack on Mr Clayton, 23, from Taunton.
He said blood found on Mr Clayton's T-shirt was "typical of decomposition" of the body.
Tom Leeper, barrister for Mr Clayton's family, asked why the T-shirt had not been retained for further examination and Dr Delaney said it was disposed of on the advice of police investigators.
The inquest continues.

A drinker has admitted the attempted murder of two men, external in a bar in Paignton.
A care home on the Devon-Somerset border says it supports calls by a leading animal charity for the rules surrounding pets in care homes to be clearer.
Chelston Park Care Home does accept pets, but the charity Blue Cross says too many older people are giving up their beloved animals because the guidelines are unclear.
It wants there to be a consistent policy for all care providers.

Torquay United manager Kevin Nicholson says his side's poor build-up was the reason they lost to Boreham Wood.
The Gulls went down 1-0, having scored nine goals in their two previous games against high-flying Forest Green.
"They went away from the game plan and started going off script and they beat themselves," Nicholson said. "I'm very disappointed with the application of the lads throughout the week and they owe the supporters and me a hell of a lot more."
The loss kept the Gulls in 17th place in the National League, just five points above the relegation places.

His body was recovered from rocks to the north of Tresco on 24 September 2015 after a major search.
Mr Clayton, 23, from Taunton, who worked in a beach cafe on Tresco, went missing on 13 September.

A holiday island bar manager whose body was pulled from the sea had been "smashed" at a party on the night he went missing an inquest has heard.
The body of Josh Clayton, 23, from Taunton, was recovered from rocks north of Tresco on the Isles of Scilly on 24 September 2015 after a major air, land and sea search an inquest in Plymouth heard.
Mr Clayton had gone missing on 13 September after a party at The Shed on Tresco.
The inquest heard the alcohol level in his blood was 2.5 times the drink-drive limit and no signs of drugs were found.
Pathologist Dr Russell Delaney said he found blood on Mr Clayton's T-shirt but no sign of an attack on him.
The inquest continues.

Plans to cut community hospital beds in Devon could risk patient safety and lead to increased bed blocking according to the Royal College of Nursing.
It's responded to a consultation on plans to cut the number of inpatient community beds and says staff will need re-training to work in people's homes.
Health commissioners at NHS New Devon CCG say they'll analyse responses to the consultation but their preference is to provide care at home - preventing hospital admissions.
Forecasters have predicted snow for Exeter, external and the rest of Devon in the coming week.

The death of a man whose body was found in Torquay Harbour is not thought to be suspicious, police have said.
Officers were alerted just after 08:00 to reports of a body in the water at Beacon Quay.
A spokesman said: "The body is male, thought to be in his 30s but he has not yet been formally identified. Enquiries are underway to identify the man."
A police cordon has been set up whilst the body is recovered.
