  3. Devon MPs say they will vote against government education plans over lack of fundingpublished at 17:55 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January 2017

    BBC Radio Devon

MPs from across Devon are warning they'll vote against the government's education plans - unless more funding is provided for the county's schools.

Historically, our schools have received among the lowest amount of cash per pupil, but they had hoped things would improve under changes to the way money for schools is allocated. But, instead, many of our schools might actually lose out.

    Gary Streeter

Gary Streeter, Conservative MP for South West Devon said: "If this education funding settlement does not change in relation to Devon's schools. If there is no significant uplift - in whatever format it will come - in six months, nine months, 12 months time to be voted on by the house - I will vote against it."

The Schools Minister Nick Gibb responded for the government, arguing that plans for a new National Funding Formula would resolve what he called "unfair" funding levels.

    BBC Radio Devon

A Devon man who set up a charity to rescue animals in Afghanistan said the dog who inspired the charity was "war torn like the town" he was named after.

He said: "This dog had his ears docked and sadly his tail was missing and he was covered in scars, so he was battle scarred and war torn like the town.

"As Marines we had a certain amount of downtime when there wasn't anything happening. You'd just sit there and wait for the next attack to come or the next patrol. I'd just sit there and be with this dog.

"I'd sit there cleaning my weapon and he'd sit next to me. We formed that kind of bond."

Hepburn, who featured in last season's Premiership final defeat, had just got fit after breaking his hand in October but will now need to undergo surgery.

"It's a pretty significant injury," head coach Rob Baxter told BBC Sport. "I feel very sorry for Alec, he's worked extremely hard to get back fit and was just getting to that stage where everything was done. He had a bit of a freak incident and now he's going to be out until next season."

Sarah from St Austell is a horse rider and thinks there has been a biased response to the story. She says all dogs need to be kept under control.

"I ride in the forestry, the amount of dog walkers I see in the forestry and I say to them 'Would you mind catching your dog and put it on a lead please? And they say 'Oh, it's alright'.

"So I say to them 'If it gets kicked, it's not my fault'. It's irresponsible dog owners."
