    More than 200 potholes have been filled in by volunteer road wardens in Devon.

    The county council set up the community scheme so that local people could make minor repairs to holes that don't meet the criteria for the council to fix them.

    A pilot was launched two years ago and initially it struggled to find people to get involved.

    But now about 100 people have been trained to do the work.

    A crack dealer has been jailed after he was found with more than £3,000 worth of drugs hidden up his bottom.

    Ashley Duhaney was caught after a foot chase by police in Northernhay Gardens, Exeter, and the drugs were later recovered in hospital.

    Duhaney, aged 30, of Lock Lane, Partington, Manchester, admitted possession of a class A drug with intent to supply and was jailed for two years and eight months by Judge Geoffrey Mercer, QC at Exeter Crown Court.

    Health campaigners in Cornwall are questioning why so many community beds are unavailable at a time when hospital emergency departments are experiencing their worst pressures for more than a decade.

    The Minor Injuries Unit in Saltash - which has a number of inpatient beds - is to close for three months because of staff shortages.

    The Edward Hain Community Hospital in St Ives is still shut after being closed a year ago over fire concerns.

    Andy Virr, senior A&E consultant at the Royal Cornwall Hospital, said having community hospitals closed at a time of high pressure on the NHS is "crazy" because community beds take pressure off acute hospitals.

    Police invited a drama group to perform in schools across Devon and Cornwall because of their show's powerful portrayal of sexual abuse.

    The Solomon Group recently presented a short play and workshop to Year 9 and 10 pupils in 20 schools across Devon and Cornwall.

    Skin Deep tells the moving story of two teenage girls who are attracted to boys from rival gangs.

    Det Supt Stephen Parker said: “This initiative has been very effective in achieving our aim of raising awareness around child sexual exploitation to young people."

    Managing director of the Solomon Group, Forest Paget, said feedback had been "really positive".

    The discovery of 360 kilos of drugs worth £50m on two beaches in Norfolk is one of the largest hauls ever washed up on the British coast. 

    It could also mean a switch away from the Channel crossing where there are extra patrols because of the refugee crisis, but the National Crime Agency, external said the investigation was at an early stage and they could not comment.

    "It's fair to say you don’t get that sort of quantity of drugs wash up very often. The investigation is ongoing so we can’t draw conclusions at this stage," a spokesman said.

    In 2005, a sack containing drugs was found washed up on the beach at Burgh Island near Kingsbridge - a popular south Devon family holiday destination. 

    At the time it seemed a large number of packages, but compared to the Norfolk find it now seems miniscule. 

    Amounts of illegal drugs being smuggled seems to have mushroomed.

    In 2009, cocaine with sale value of £2.5m was in a number of packages found washed up on two Cornish beaches - 52kg at Bude and on the Lizard peninsula. 

    Then in 2009, a 20kg haul of cocaine, worth £6m at the time, was found washed ashore at Frenchman's Bay, Rye on the Sussex coast.

    Police say the suspected beheading of a swan in Exeter has been "investigated as far as reasonably possible at this time".

    Police were told on Wednesday about the dead animal which was found near the Samuel Jones Pub, on The Quay.

    The city council's environmental health team collected the swan and "raised concerns" over how it had died.

    Another swan which is thought to have been decapitated was handed to council officials at The Quay on Saturday.

    If you're out enjoying the coast paths in Cornwall this afternoon, you may find yourself cheering on hundreds of people running.

    Distance runners from all over the world will be taking part in a 100-mile coastal run called The Arc of Attrition.

    The challenge started in Coverack at noon and runners have 36 hours to make their journey around the south west of Cornwall.

    The finish will be in Porthtowan on the north coast.

    Cornish Pirates have agreed a two-year deal with prop Christian Judge, who will join the club next season.

    Judge, 23, will move from fellow Championship club Bedford Blues and returns to Cornwall after playing for Launceston from the age of eight.

    A member of Cornwall's County Championship-winning side in 2015 and 2016, he also spent a season playing at Plymouth Albion in National One.

    "Having grown up in Cornwall, this is an exciting opportunity," Judge said.

  12. Padstow RNLI lifeboat responds to sighting of red flarespublished at 15:56 Greenwich Mean Time 10 February 2017

    Padstow RNLI lifeboat was launched last night after reports of red flares. 

    The crew carried out a shoreline search from the station to Harlyn Bay and Trevone and on to Stepper Point. 

    They continued the search back to Trevose Head and after finding nothing the crew were stood down and returned to the lifeboat station at 20:10 after a hour-long search.

    A man from St Austell has been jailed for 10 years for sexually assaulting two girls who he groomed with sweets and gave alcohol.

    Simon Couch, 48, molested one girl repeatedly over two years, a court heard.

    Couch, of Dobell Road, St Austell, was found guilty of five counts of indecent assault by a jury last year.

    The court heard the offences took place when the two girls were aged between nine and 11 in the late 1990s. Both victims had been left with serious psychological damage and one developed problems with drink and drugs as a teenager, Exeter Crown Crourt heard.

    Recorder Mr Jonathan Barnes told Couch: "You are still in denial as to what you did to these two young girls and are still making unpleasant allegations of dishonesty against one. It is perfectly clear you have no remorse for what you did."

    The majority of councils in the South West say they'll have to raise council tax in the next financial year and charge more for services.

    It's because they don't think they'll get enough from the government. 

    A survey by the Local Government Information Unit found 84% of councils across the country think the current formula is not fit for purpose.
