    The minister - and Camborne, Redruth & Hayle Conservatives MP - was commenting on calls for the government to relax seabass quotas after it was reported one Cornish fisherman was forced to throw about 1,000kg of the fish overboard.

    Current rules say vessels with fixed nets can only land 250kg a month.

    The Cornish Fish Producers Organisation said it was easy to reach sea bass limits because they congregated in certain areas in large numbers.

    An obese cancer patient has complained to an ambulance firm after he says he was dropped on his household steps as he was being taken to hospital.

    Robert Wiley, 62, who weighs 23-stone, told the BBC he fell on his back after the specially adapted wheelchair he was in toppled over.

    "I was left like a beached whale, it was embarrassing," said bed-ridden former van driver Mr Wiley from Saltash in Cornwall. 

    He said he also suffered bruising to an ankle. 

    He suffers from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and bladder cancer and needs an oxygen supply to breath properly.

    The private ambulance firm responsible and the NHS were unavailable for immediate comment.

    A small number of people used the Brexit vote "to legitimise inexcusable racism and prejudice", the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) says.

    Its comments come after new figures compiled by Victim Support and the Press Association showed a majority of police forces in England and Wales saw record levels of hate crimes in the first full three months following the EU referendum.

    More than 14,000 hate crimes were recorded between July and September. Devon and Cornwall Police had 220 incidents, a rise of more than 60% on the three months before. In one case in Plymouth, a Polish family's shed was targeted in an arson attack (pictured).

    EHRC Chairman David Isaac said: "We cannot allow such intolerable acts of hate to be condoned or repeated."

    He added that the "triggering of Article 50 is the next major milestone, and we must do all we can to discourage hate attacks and to support people who feel at risk".

    In-form striker Graham Massey scored an 88th-minute leveller and set up Sandro Semedo's stoppage-time winner as Leyton Orient won 3-2 at second-placed Plymouth Argyle in League Two.

    Antoni Sarcevic fired Argyle into a 10th-minute lead from close range after target man Ryan Taylor nodded down left-back Gary Sawyer's deep far-post cross. Sarcevic later hobbled off with an ankle injury - on 37 minutes - and within six minutes Orient levelled. 

    Left-winger Massey took his tally to three goals in three games with a superb solo effort, cutting in before letting fly with a low 18-yard shot into the far corner.

    On-loan Cardiff City winger Matty Kennedy restored Argyle's lead on 53 minutes, smashing home from outside the box for his second goal in two home games. On the hour Kennedy curled another 18 yarder off the outside of the post with O's teenage keeper Sam Sargeant beaten.

    Orient, who were without a win this year before Tuesday, equalised when Massey thumped home from Sandro's cross and completed the comeback when Semedo tapped home the winner in the last of four minutes of stoppage-time.

    Work on 36 new GWR intercity trains to connect Devon and Cornwall to London has got under way in Italy. 

    When the AT300 trains are finished, GWR said they would have more seats, space and on board technology, and the possibility of shorter journey times.

    The rail operator also confirmed to BBC Radio Devon that they would be guaranteed to get past Dawlish. 

    The sea-facing line through the town has caused problems for services over the years, with trains being swept by waves, damaging them; and salt water even causing engines to stop after it affected electrical systems.

    The trains are likely to be ready from 2018.

    Hate crimes in Devon and Cornwall reportedly rose by more than 60% in the three months after the EU referendum.

    A majority of police forces in England and Wales saw record levels of reported hate crimes between July and September last year, and in Devon and Cornwall there were 220 incidents. The figures were compiled by Victim Support and the Press Association.

    In one incident, a Polish family's shed was targeted in an arson attack and a "hate-filled letter" containing threats was sent (pictured).

    The force said its diverse communities' teams and neighbourhood teams were "working hard to provide support and reassurance to all our communities ... that any instances of hate such as abuse, harassment or violence are completely unacceptable and will be dealt with robustly, with a zero tolerance approach."

    • There's slow traffic on the A38 near Chudleigh, at Harcombe Bends, heading towards Exeter 
    • In Plymouth, there are lane closures on Outland Road, around Peverell Park Road, due to roadworks. Traffic is busy outbound
    • At Parkham, near Bideford, Rectory Lane is closed in both directions at Barton Road due to a pub fire ealier this week
    • In Paignton, the A380 King's Ash Road is closed between Higher Ramshill Lane and Marldon Road due to roadworks. A diversion is in place
    • In Cornwall, there's slow traffic on the A390 at Tresillian due to temporary lights and roadworks. There are westbound tailbacks to the Probus bypass 
    • In Leedstown, at the junction of Praze Road and Chapel Road, there are a number of sets of temporary traffic lights. Expect delays
    • In the Glynn Valley, the A38 westbound is closed for roadworks between the superstore and Halfway House. The A390 diversion route now busy

    The car forced at least one other vehicle to swerve to avoid a crash.

    Police said traffic officers used a "box manoeuvre" to bring the car to a stop on the A30 near Camborne in Cornwall when it was travelling west on the eastbound carriageway at about 09:30 on Tuesday.

    A 58-year-old woman from St Merryn, Cornwall, has been arrested and released on bail while police investigate a potential dangerous driving offence.

    A man has been taken to hospital after inhaling smoke after a fire broke out in a first floor flat in Plymouth.

    The fire service said crews were called to the block in Lipstone Crescent at about 04:50 after a call from a member of the public who could hear a smoke alarm and see a fire in a window. 

    The cause of the fire is being investigated.

    The Plymouth Herald reported, external it was the second fire in the block recently.
