Devon and Cornwall Police saw a 63% increase.

Police said their own monitoring suggested incidents had levelled out after the summer's spike.

An organisation representing fishermen in Cornwall says one had to discard about 1,000kg of sea bass because of the government's landing quotas.

The Cornish Fish Producers Organisation said it was easy to reach sea bass limits because they congregated in certain areas in large numbers.

Current rules say vessels with fixed nets can only land 250kg per month, meaning the rest have to be discarded.

The government is being urged to relax the quotas.
