    Plans for a multimillion-pound revamp of the seafront at Exmouth have been given the green light.

    Councillors approved plans for a sports centre, hotel, shops and café.

    However, Dawn Hirst, from Harbour View Cafe, believes people will miss the current facilities.

    "It certainly seems from the plans there doesn't seem to be anything similar going up. I think there will be a massive gap there for the people that use this place and love this place."

    Elaine Lewis, Exmouth resident, said: "I think Exmouth is a place of natural beauty, and the development will sweep this away forever. Unless we manage to retain what people love about Exmouth, they won't come.

    A little girl who was raped by a nurse alerted her mother to the crime, a court has heard.

    The mother saw George Anderson, 27, come out of the child's bedroom while at a party at the family's home.

    When challenged, Anderson said the girl had been crying and popped in to check on her.

    Later she heard the girl screaming and saw Anderson again coming out of her room. The court heard he lied and said he had heard her cries and went in to see if she was okay. 

    It was the next morning that the child told her mother about what had happened.

    Anderson admitted 10 charges at Exeter Crown Court including the rape of a child and has been jailed for 19 years and four months.

  5. Motorists who travel through bus gate could be prosecutedpublished at 13:31 British Summer Time 11 April 2017

    Details of 17 motorists who have driven through the Threemilestone bus gate have been passed to the police. 

    The controversial gate allows buses from the village to gain access to the Truro-bound A390 without having to do a u-turn in the village. 

    Some local residents campaigned to get the scheme scrapped, claiming their village would be under siege with 140 buses passing through each day.

    The gate has been operating since 16 March and uses cameras to record the number plates of any vehicle that isn't a bus. 

    Cornwall Council says the lane is clearly marked for buses only and the offending motorists could face prosecution.

    A nurse who filmed himself raping a toddler abused the girl numerous times over a three-and-a-half-hour period while attending a drinks party at her family home, a court has heard.

    George Anderson, who worked as a psychiatric nurse at Torbay Hospital, filmed the rape which happened in November 2016.

    Exeter Crown Court heard Anderson had made nine video files and taken still images from 23.12 that night, until 02.47 the next day.

    He has been jailed for more than 19 years.

    An ex-Torbay Hospital nurse has been jailed after filming himself raping a three-year-old girl as she slept in her own bed. 

    George Anderson told the girl he was a doctor as he returned to her bedroom to repeatedly abuse her while attending a drinks party by the child's mother, Exeter Crown Court heard.

    The 27-year-old was even caught coming out of the child's room by her mother - but lied that he heard her cry and was trying to reassure her.  

    He has been jailed for 19 years and four months.

    Controversial plans for a radical revamp of the seafront at Exmouth have moved a step closer.

    After years of wrangling the finer details of a future vision of a multimillion-pound sports centre, hotel, shops and café have been given the green light by councillors.

    A new enterprise zone in Cornwall will cover three separate sites at Hayle, Tolvaddon and Falmouth Docks.

    It's hoped it will bring together expertise in the marine sector. 

    Marine Hub Cornwall is one of a dozen new enterprise zones to go live this spring across the country. It aims to cement Cornwall's status as a world-class centre for marine renewable energy.

    Forty eight enterprise zones, external have now been launched in England. They are intended to support new ventures by young entrepreneurs, and it's hoped they will attract investment and create well-paid jobs.

    A dalmatian that fell 100ft down cliffs in Cornwall survived with just a scratch on her leg.

    The volunteer crew at St Agnes RNLI and the volunteer patrol from St Agnes Surf Lifesaving Club were involved in her rescue, when she was happily reunited with her owners.

    The Royal Signals Motorcycle Display team will be disbanded this year, it has been announced.

    The White Helmets perform stunts and acrobatics on motorcycles, and have been performing for more than 80 years.

    Penzance have claimed an international cricketing scalp.

    Playing in the La Manga cricket classic as part of their pre-season preparations, the west Cornwall team beat the Spanish national side.

    Penzance won all seven of their matches, to take the title.

  17. Motorcyclist, 28, has 'life-threatening injuries' after crash published at 11:07 British Summer Time 11 April 2017

    Police are appealing for witnesses after a motorcyclist sustained life-threatening injuries after a crash near Helston, Cornwall on Saturday night.

    Emergency services were called at 19:20 following the crash between the Suzuki 600cc motorcycle, a VW Transporter van and a Chevrolet Spark on the B3297 at Farms Common.

    The 28-year-old man from Helston sustained serious head, leg and arm injuries and was airlifted to the Royal Cornwall Hospital.

    He was later transferred to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth where he remains in a critical condition.

    Alcohol education charity Drinkaware has disputed a claim by Buckfast monks that they supported the charity.

    Last year Buckfast Abbey Trust said it supported charities like Drinkaware.

    But a Drinkaware spokeserson said: “Buckfast Abbey are not currently supporting Drinkaware nor have they funded Drinkaware in the past.”

    The trust has made about £88m since 2004 from royalties made on each bottle of Buckfast sold, according to the Charity Commission.

    Plans to extend an official site built to house travellers at a Devon beauty spot are set to be approved today.

    Teignbridge District Council wants to build three more units at the Haldon Ridge site near Exeter taking the total to 18.

    Since the official site was opened in 2014 income from council tax has increased from £0 to about £17,000 per year.

    So far, £35,000 has been raised.
