    BBC Radio Berkshire

The Thames Valley Police and Crime Commissioner has told BBC Radio Berkshire that people "wouldn't just sit back and watch somebody killing people if you could put a stop to it".

His comments come after a row resulting from Devon and Cornwall's police commissioner saying she would "really be interested" in gun owners acting as armed civilians in the event of a terror attack.

Devon and Cornwall's Alison Hernandez made the comments during a radio phone-in on Monday. She has since said her comments were "misinterpreted".

    Anthony Stansfeld

Talking about the recent London and Manchester attacks, Thames Valley Police Commissioner Anthony Stansfeld (pictured) said: "In great big rural areas like Devon and Cornwall, and parts of the Thames Valley, you're not going to get police there absolutely straight away with a gun.

"If somebody was walking down the main street shooting everybody - or probably knifing them is more appropriate, as that's what happened in London - if you had a gun available to you, are you going to sit there and let them get on with it for the next half an hour?"

He was then asked that if a local farmer was there, and they knew they had a gun, should they take action.

Mr Stansfeld replied: "I think if he had an opportunity and he was absolutely certain that he knew what he was doing at the time, and he'd have to answer for it afterwards, I think probably yes. I mean, you wouldn't just sit back and watch somebody killing people if you could put a stop to it.

"I think that is reasonable, but I think we have to be very careful that what we're not doing is trying to set up vigilante armed groups, because that would be disastrous."
