    A public consultation starts today, external asking for views on how many Cornwall councillors there should be in the future.

    At the moment there are 123 councillors, but the Boundary Commission is proposing that number should be reduced to 87.

    The commission said there were big differences in the number of voters in each ward and it wanted to redraw boundary divisions so each councillor represented roughly the same amount of voters

    A woman has been seriously injured in a road crash near Newquay, police say.

    Officers said a Volkswagen Polo and a Ford Focus collided on the A3075 at about 11:35 on Monday in a crash which resulted in the road being closed between Newquay and Goonhavern for about four hours.

    The driver of the Polo, a woman in her 40s, sustained injuries. The passenger of the Focus received serious injuries, police said, external.

    Officers have appealed for witnesses.

    Police do not want members of the public to carry a firearm because "if you're carrying a gun, we will deal with you and deal with you immediately", a senior officer says.

    Deputy Chief Constable Paul Netherton, of Devon and Cornwall Police, was responding to local police commissioner Alison Hernandez's comments during a BBC Radio Cornwall interview that she would ask the chief constable whether gun owners could act as armed civilians in the event of a terror attack.

    However, she also told the BBC that she was unsure what the legal implications would be if weapons were used in such "extreme circumstances".

    But DCC Netherton (pictured below) said: "A marauding gunman... is probably the most challenging situation the police service is facing, and our response to that is by highly professional officers, as well as firearms officers and special forces, and we would not want the public to be involved in that situation, especially with firearms.

    "As was seen in London, we responded immediately, and we don't have time to find out if you're an innocent member of the public or a terrorist. If you're carrying a gun we will deal with you and deal with you immediately."

    He urged anyone caught up in a terrorist attack instead to "run, hide and inform us".

    Cat owners in Cornwall who wonder what their feline friends get up to when they go out can now take part in a local project to help find out.

    Researchers from Exeter University in Penryn are asking people with cats to let them wear a tracking device to monitor behaviour, personality and feeding.

    It's part of an international project which will rate cats according to friendliness, skittishness and outgoingness.

    People in Cornwall "are entitled to a better service" at its main hospital, which has been told by inspectors that its services had not improved since last year.

    The Care Quality Commission said there had been "little sign of real improvement" at the Royal Cornwall Hospital and Cornwall deserved a "better service". In January 2016, it found the hospital to be inadequate.

    The commission said it was "well aware of the demands on the service", but found too many patients were waiting to be diagnosed, treated, admitted or discharged.

    Chief inspector Professor Sir Mike Richards said: "The people of Cornwall are entitled to a better service. Such are my concerns that we will be returning to the trust in July to carry out a full inspection of all core services. We will decide then what further action we must take to ensure that services improve."

    Kathy Byrne, chief executive for the trust, said the inspection took place on "difficult days" for the hospital and improvements had been made.

    The Bloodhound supersonic car will run for the first time on 26 October.

    It is going to conduct a series of "slow speed" trials on the runway at Newquay Airport in Cornwall.

    Engineers want to shake down the vehicle's systems before heading out to South Africa next year to try to break the land speed record.

    This stands at 763mph (1,228km/h), and Bloodhound, external's aim is to raise the mark in two stages - by getting first to 800mph and then to 1,000mph.

    The Newquay trials will not see anything like those speeds. The 9,000ft-long (2,744m) runway at the former RAF base is simply too short to allow Bloodhound to use the full thrust at its disposal.

    A 2,000-signature petition has been gathered opposing a controversial development in one of the region's most iconic landscapes.

    The Burgh Island Hotel has planning permission for a pool house, which will be a luxury hotel suite perched between an island headland and a sea stack.

    Those supporting it hope it will bring new visitors to south Devon, but those opposing it believe it's totally inappropriate for the area.

    The coastline surrounding the tidal island, which was frequented by writer Agatha Christie and inspired the setting for one of her crime mysteries, is designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

    As we reported on Local Live yesterday, Devon and Cornwall's police and crime commissioner has found herself at odds with her own force by saying she would look into whether gun owners could act as armed civilians in the event of a terror attack.

    Alison Hernandez was on a BBC Radio Cornwall phone-in when a caller suggested the idea. She said she would "really be interested" in exploring the issue.

    However, the force said armed civilians would risk being caught in the crossfire. Deputy Chief Constable Paul Netherton (pictured) said it was "definitely an emphatic 'no'" that people should be arming themselves against such a threat and that tackling terrorists should be left to the police.

    An unannounced inspection of the Royal Cornwall Hospital has revealed services have not improved since last year.
