Firefighters in Devon and Somerset are being trained to give emergency medical treatment to victims of a terror attack as a contingency, not because there is intelligence of a specific threat, the chief fire officer says.
A team of 42 volunteers have been taught how to deal with bullet wounds, shock, and injuries caused from being hit by fast-moving vehicles.
Their role would be to provide back up to paramedics at the scene. Firefighters will also help if casualties need evacuating from the scene of an attack
Chief Fire Officer Lee Howell (pictured) said: "The ambulance service might be very stretched in the event of a terrorist attack. This could help save lives.
"Hopefully, the capability will never be needed. But, if the worst happens, we need to be as prepared as possible."
