Cases of children being left at home on their own in parts of the South West have nearly doubled in the last year, according to the NSPCC.

The charity said counsellors on its 24-hour helpline had to intervene in Devon 52 times last year and refer cases to local agencies, up from 28 the year before.

It also dealt with 49 cases in Cornwall over the last two years.

It said the summer holidays could be a difficult time for families and, although the law did not give a minimum age at which children could be left on their own, parents and carers could be prosecuted for neglect if children were put at risk.
