    A361 crash

    A woman and her two children who died in a road crash on the A361 in north Devon were from the Milton Keynes area, police say, external.

    Officers were called to the scene near Barnstaple at 08:25 on Monday after the woman's car hit an oncoming lorry. The woman's husband, who was travelling in a separate vehicle with her 14-year-old son, saw the crash unfolding behind them.

    Devon and Cornwall Police said the 43-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

    Her 12-year-old daughter was pronounced dead on arrival at North Devon District Hospital, and her 12-year-old son, taken to hospital via air ambulance, died shortly after his arrival.

    The road was closed for nine hours for a police investigation. Officers have appealed for witnesses or anyone with information to contact them.

    People who see others in trouble in the sea should not go into the water themselves to carry out a rescue, but should dial 999, lifeguards say.

    New figures from the RNLI show August is the worst month for coastal water deaths in the South West, with 26 during that month over the past five years.

    It added that less than one fifth of people in the UK said they would call 999 immediately to ask for help if they saw someone fall into open water.

    Steve Instance, RNLI Community Safety Partner for the South West, said: "If you see someone else in trouble, don't go into the water yourself as you may also end up in serious danger. Instead, dial 999 and ask for the coastguard."

    Eighteen-year-old Michaela Howells is one of the youngest fully-trained lifeboat crew in the UK.

    Her main job is at Boots in the harbour town of Padstow, Cornwall. But, if the call comes, she can be in rescue mode within 10 minutes.

    "I always have my buzzer on me," she explains, admitting that she lives a "split life".

    Michaela trains every Wednesday afternoon at sea and is the only female in her crew of 14. Last year she went out on 15 emergency calls.

    "One large car park" - that's how some people living in Exeter have described trying to get around the city while a number of roadworks are in place on major routes.

    They said they were disappointed that work on Bridge Road at Countess Wear was to be continuing for another few weeks at least.

    Devon County Council announced on Friday that the scheme, which was due to be completed in the spring, was to continue well into this month.

    It comes as drivers on Cowick Street have also reported long delays while emergency sewerage repairs take place. The work will continue for another fortnight, according to highways bosses.

    A policeman has been sacked after he was found with live bullets and indecent images of children.

    The police constable appeared at a private hearing before Devon and Cornwall Police's deputy chief constable in July.

    The force revealed that the unnamed officer admitted in an Exeter court five offences and "by doing so admitted criminal liability for them".

    He pleaded guilty to possessing a total of 290 indecent images of children. It is believed he collected them between June 2010 and October 2016. A handful of the images were of the most serious category.

    The Devon-based officer also admitted possessing two live bullets without holding a firearms certificate at that time.

    And he also admitted possessing a weapon designed or adapted for the discharge of a noxious liquid namely Pava, an incapacitating spray.

    The force said: "The officer was dismissed without notice."
