    Newly promoted Plymouth made a losing return to League One as they suffered defeat at Peterborough United at the weekend.

    The Pilgrims fell behind just four minutes into their opening fixture of the season when a Leo Da Silva Lopes cross took a wicked deflection off Gary Sawyer - who was credited with an own goal - and flummoxed goalkeeper Luke McCormick.

    Plymouth conceded again two minutes into the second period as their appeals for a foul were ignored after Posh debutant Jack Marriott robbed defender Sonny Bradley. Marriott then laid a second goal on a plate for Junior Morias.

    Terrific saves from McCormick kept Derek Adams' side in the contest as he denied Doughty and Marriott before Plymouth halved their arrears.

    Torquay and Plymouth are personal bankruptcy hotspots in Britain, according to a new study.

    Seaside towns and cities dominate the list by accountancy firm Moore Stephens, which said its research showed that coastal industries and tourism had continued to decline.

    It added that seaside tourist areas often lacked the economic diversity of bigger cities and were too reliant on low-spending domestic tourists for employment.

    The top spot was Torquay (pictured top), with 43 insolvencies per 10,000 residents, compared with a national average of just under 20.

    Plymouth (above) was also in the top 10 at 35 insolvencies per 10,000 people.

    One person has been freed from a car after it was in a collision with a lorry on the A361 in Devon, firefighters say, external.

    Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said two fire crews were called to the scene on the southbound lane between Borners Bridge and Bish Mill at about 11:20.

    It said: "The casualty was successfully released by crews using hydraulic rescue equipment, a scoop stretcher and small tools".

    They were then taken to hospital by ambulance. Their condition is not known.

    A Devon captain who was five times over the legal alcohol limit while berthing his cargo ship in New Zealand has been fined and suspended.

    Anthony Baker, 53, was breath-tested after harbour staff noticed he "smelled of alcohol" as they helped dock the 40,000-tonne vessel Shansi at Marsden Point north of Auckland on Friday.

    He admitted breaching New Zealand's maritime law in Whangarei District Court on Monday.

    He has been fined 3,000 New Zealand dollars (US$2,222; £1,692) and suspended by his employer, the court heard.

    Torbay Council has done a U-turn on plans to axe HIV support and advocacy services in the district.

    The council had announced last month it would no longer fund the programme beyond the end of September.

    The council had said Torbay was "not an area of high HIV prevalence" and the money could be reinvested in wider preventative sexual health services.

    The unitary authority said it had put the plans on hold and was doing more research to assess the impact of such a cut.

    However, Torbay's Liberal Democrats said they feared it would be just a stay of execution for such services.

    A big search has been carried out in south Devon for a retired guide dog who's been missing for more than three weeks.

    The local community responded on Sunday to an appeal on social media and dog lovers and their pets turned out to help look for 13-year-old Indy in the Anstey Cove area.

    More than 80 friends - human and canine - took part in the search.

    Owner Helen Redclift said: "My cats and my dogs are my family. I do hope he comes back soon."

    Police in Cornwall are warning drivers that doing U-turns on the A30 near Hayle is illegal and also "extremely dangerous".

    Penzance Police said on Facebook, external that officers had recently "received numerous reports" of such manoeuvres and that drivers should be patient "as we all know at this time of year there is grid lock and heavy traffic everywhere".

    Officers added: "There were two serious collisions last year on the stretch between Loggans and St Erth, one resulting in the death of one driver.

    "Our suggestion is to find an alternative route and, if not, wait patiently and you will get through."

    Police said regular patrols were being conducted and drivers caught performing U-turns "will be stopped and dealt with accordingly".

    It means the closure of 10 platforms as work begins to extend them to accommodate longer trains.

    Victims of acid attacks in Britain are calling on the government to enforce longer prison sentences and tighten controls on the sale of corrosive substances, after a jump in the number of cases last year and in 2017.

    Thirty-two-year-old Andreas Christopheros (pictured), who was assaulted at his home in Truro in 2014, has joined this chorus of acid attack survivors demanding that tough words become reality.

    "I believe the UK has got its strategy towards this completely wrong," he told Reuters at his home.

    "I strongly believe that the sentencing for anyone who carries out any form of acid attack, whether their intended victim is injured badly or not, should serve a life sentence, with a minimum term of 20 or more years."

    The Home Office said it planned to set out guidance for prosecutors on classifying corrosive substances as dangerous weapons and to review sentencing guidelines.

    Two people have been arrested after a man suffered potentially life-threatening head injuries in a suspected assault in Cornwall.

    Police said the 27-year-old man was found injured in a car park in West Street, St Columb Major, near Newquay at about 22:10 last Thursday. He is being treated at a specialist head trauma hospital.

    Devon and Cornwall Police said: "An investigation has commenced and police have arrested a 43-year-old man and 25-year-old woman on suspicion of assault to the injured male."

    Officers have appealed for anyone with information, or CCTV of the area, or anyone that may have witnessed the incident to contact them.
