    A school in Newquay has been put in special measures.

    Last week a number of pupils at Treviglas College were put in detention because the school says they turned up for the first day of term in non regulation shoes. However the shoe row is not said to be linked to Ofsted's decision.

    An inspection of the college at the end of June resulted in an overall rating of "inadequate" compared to its previous one of "outstanding".

    The Ofsted report says teachers have low expectations of what pupils can achieve, there's a high level of absenteeism and feedback to students on how to improve their work is regularly ignored.

    However, it does say the sixth form at Treviglas has improved as a result of stronger leadership.

    The Met Office is warning of very strong winds this morning which could cause some travel disruption, short-term loss of power and possible tree damage.

    The westerly winds will gust from 45-50 mph quite widely, although gusts of up to 60 mph are expected along exposed coasts.

    The Met Office's chief forecaster said with trees still in full leaf, they could more susceptible to damage with resulting debris possibly affecting roads and overhead power supply lines.

    The wind strength is expected to ease later, although some strong gusts may persist into the afternoon.

    A flat in Axminster has been issued with a three-month closure order because of repeated anti-social behaviour, including underage drinking and drug taking.

    The closure of the property at Milton Mews was ordered by Exeter Magistrates who said they were satisfied the tenant, 56-year-old John Cambridge, had caused nuisance to the public and anti-social behaviour.

    PCSO Hayley Widger described the closure order - the first of its kind in the area - as "good news" as local residents had suffered "misery and grief" because of the behaviour at the flat.

    Plymouth's Labour group is calling for council by-elections after three UKIP councillors announced they were joining the Conservatives.

    The defections mean the Tories now have an overall majority with 30 councillors to Labour's 27.

    John Riley (Honicknowle), Maddi Bridgeman (Moor View) and Christopher Storer (Ham) said UKIP's work in the city was finished following the Brexit referendum vote.

    But Labour says the councillors should face by-elections because people in their wards didn't elect them as Tories.

  5. Woman airlifted to hospital after A30 crashpublished at 09:14 British Summer Time 11 September 2017

    A woman has been seriously injured in a two-car crash on the A30 in Devon near Monkton.

    Emergency services were called to the incident involving a green BMW and a white Fiat Ducato on Sunday evening just before 18:00.

    The 41-year-old driver of the BMW was airlifted to hospital Bristol where she remains in a serious condition.

    Two other people - a passenger in the BMW and the driver of the Fiat - received minor injuries.

    Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to contact Devon and Cornwall Police.

    A musician from Cornwall says he's lost everything after getting caught up in Hurricane Irma while working in the Caribbean.

    Martyn Lucas from St Columb was on the island of St Martin when the storm struck and like many islanders was stuck with no food or water.

    He's now been airlifted by the American Army to Puerto Rico and has been telling BBC Radio Cornwall it was a huge relief after such a frightening ordeal

    A Devon farm has started experimenting with new technology to make it easier for shoppers to know exactly where their food's come from.

    A new mobile phone app's just been launched - and a simple scan of a new digital label will show how the product's been processed and transported, even showing pictures of the animals and the farm they lived on.

    Plymouth's three UKIP councillors are joining the Conservatives.

    The defections mean the Tories now have an overall majority with 30 councillors to Labour's 27.

  14. Prescription drug Pregabalin linked to death risepublished at 08:02 British Summer Time 11 September 2017

    Deaths linked to a drug readily prescribed on the NHS have increased dramatically after claims it has flooded the black market.

    Pregabalin, external, used to treat pain, anxiety and epilepsy, is being sold illegally to addicts and taken with other drugs such as heroin, leading to overdoses.

    BBC News meets addict Martin Hopkins from Plymouth, Devon, as he takes the drug.

    In 2012 there were four deaths linked to pregabalin, last year there were 111.
