    This afternoon will continue quite wet with locally heavy rain and gale-force winds arriving from the west later.

    A band of locally heavy rain will move eastwards this evening, accompanied by strong to gale-force winds, especially over the coasts and hills.

    There will be clear spells and blustery showers following.

    Perranporth beach in north Cornwall has been reopened after concerns over a large number of man-of-war found on it led to its closure.

    The jellyfish-like creatures, with long purple tentacles, have been seen in Cornwall and Wales this month.

    The beach at Perranporth is one of the largest in the county.

    RNLI manager Dickon Berriman said lifeguards found an "unusually large number" of the creatures on the beach when they arrived this morning.

    They closed it for a short time while they took advice. Mr Berriman confirmed it had been reopened.

    The jellyfish-like creatures, with long purple tentacles, have been seen in Cornwall and Wales this month.

    The beach at Perranporth is one of the largest in the county.

    A mountaineer and former Royal Marine died after he grabbed a loose boulder the size of a car bonnet which struck his head, an inquest heard.

    Former Royal Marine mountain leader Duncan Potts was killed instantly when the huge boulder smashed into his helmet.

    He was still attached to a rope and fell just 3m (10ft) when the accident happened as he climbed with another British man in the French Alps in July 2016.

    The inquest at Exeter's County Hall was told the 28-year-old Duncan and his partner Luke Stevens were descending from their climb when the incident happened.

    The coroner concluded his death was accidental.

    Maureen told BBC Cornwall that Boston was "totally bemused by it all" but needed a bath when they got home.

    Storm Aileen is the first named storm of the season for the UK.

    A yellow warning from the UK Met Office is in force from 20:00 until 10:00 tomorrow for strong winds affecting parts of north Cornwall and north Devon. Gusts of wind up to 60mph are possible in these areas.

    The storm comes to a peak just before midnight, with winds easing a little thereafter. Spells of heavy rain will accompany the frontal system associated with Aileen this evening.

    Plymouth Argyle playmaker Graham Carey will miss the club's next three League One games after the Pilgrims' appeal against his sending off on Saturday was turned down.

    Carey was given a straight red card for a challenge in the first half of their defeat by MK Dons at Home Park.

    Argyle had hoped to get the decision overturned but Carey will now serve a suspension, which includes missing their match against Blackpool tonight.

    Police are appealing for witnesses to an assault in Exeter which left a 21-year-old man with facial injuries.

    The assault happened in Exhibition Way, on the Pinhoe Trading Estate, some time between 22:45 and 23:15 on Friday.

    The victim was locking up his garage having moved his car when a young man came across the road and threw an egg at his vehicle.

    When he followed the offender and challenged his actions, he was set upon by a number of male youths. He was punched in the face and knocked to the ground before being kicked and his head stamped on.

    The offenders then ran off leaving the victim with a black eye and a missing tooth.

    Police have appealed, external for witnesses and information.

    At Moortown Cross, South Molton, a road closure and diversion remain in place after an earlier crash.

    Police said the road was due to remain shut for some time.

    A motorcyclist was seriously injured in the crash involving his bike and an HGV near the Moortown Barton picnic area on the road parallel to the A361.

    The A361 itself is unaffected.

    Beachgoers have been warned to stay away from potentially fatal Portuguese man-of-war which have washed up on English and Welsh beaches.

    The jellyfish-like creatures, with long purple tentacles, have been seen in Cornwall and Wales this month, says the Marine Conservation Society (MCS).

    And with sea temperatures around 16C (61F), there are concerns about swimmers getting stung.

    The MCS has also seen a rise in numbers of leatherback turtles washed up.

    Men-of-war have been spotted at Newgale, Pembrokeshire, on 8 September. They were seen on beaches around Newquay in Cornwall the next day.

    They have also been seen on Porth Mellon Beach on the Isles of Scilly, Portheras Cove and Summerleaze, Widemouth, Perranporth, Hayle and Gwithian beaches; as well as Holywell Bay and Praa Sands.

    A leatherback turtle was found at Portreath on 9 September and at least another one has been reported in Pembrokeshire, with another sighting to be confirmed.

    Seven out of 14 police forces have been dubbed "inadequate" for failing to record hundreds of thousands of crimes reported to them, including the Devon and Cornwall force.

    Just three forces were rated "good" by HM Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services (HMICFRS).

    Inspectors said the failure rate was a "serious concern" and would result in crimes not being investigated properly.

    Police claimed many incidents were recorded but were not "classified correctly".

    Eight local charities are getting a share of £79,000 from the Devonshire Freemasons.

    Honiton-based NHS out-of-hours service Devon Freewheelers, Winkleigh Relief in Need and Dream-A-Way in Exminster will all get cash.

    The charities will be handed the money at Mount Edgecumbe Masonic Hall in Plymouth this afternoon.

    Pregnant women in Devon and Cornwall are being offered flu jabs when they visit hospital this winter.

    It follows a trial at antenatal appointments at Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton, Somerset.

    The number of women having the vaccination has almost doubled to eight in 10.

    Julie Yates, head of immunisation for the South West at Public Health England, said being pregnant could actually weaken a woman's immune system.

    "As the baby grows, it compresses their lungs, so they're much more vulnerable to things like pneumonia and other serious lung conditions if they contract the flu," she said.
