    Firefighters have been tackling a large blaze involving caravans and cars in a yard near Buckfastleigh overnight.

    The alarm was raised just after midnight, but no injuries were reported and the fire is not thought to be suspicious.

    National League side Torquay United have appointed Bath City boss Gary Owers as their new head coach, with Martin Kuhl joining as his assistant.

    Owers, 48, replaces Kevin Nicholson, who was the first boss to be sacked in England's top five divisions this season when he left on 17 August.

    The former Bristol City, Notts County and Sunderland midfielder watched their 3-1 defeat by Bromley last night.

    Torquay are bottom of the fifth tier, with just three points from 10 games.

    Storm Aileen - the first named storm of the season - has brought down a number of trees in the South West, leading to some travel disruption.

    Wind gusts of up to 70mph have been recorded and a some power lines have also been brought down.

    Archaeologists say a new trend of "stone stacking" at ancient monuments in Cornwall is vandalism and needs to be stopped to protect the area's heritage.

    Scores of balanced stones - known as fairy stacks, or fairy castles - have appeared at Stowe's Pound on Bodmin Moor.

    The early Neolithic site, which is about 6,000 years old, has legal protection as a Schedules Ancient Monument.

    Historic England said removing the stones was akin to "rubbing out history".

    Plymouth slumped to their fourth League One defeat of the season after losing to Blackpool at a rain-swept Home Park on Tuesday evening.

    Blackpool took advantage after Argyle were reduced to 10 men for the third home game in a row following the 65th-minute dismissal of centre-back Ryan Edwards for a second bookable offence.

    The score was 1-1 at that stage but Blackpool were ahead within six minutes when captain Jimmy Ryan sent an angled 20-yard drive past Luke McCormick.

    Blackpool then wrapped up their fourth win of the campaign when substitute Nathan Delfouneso sent an even better long-range drive skidding off the surface and past McCormick in the 86th minute.

    • On the St Mawes Ferry, the 08:30 sailing from the Prince of Wales Pier and the 09:00 sailing from St Mawes have both been cancelled
    • Traffic lights are stuck on red in Bodmin, on Robartes Road, near the school
    • There is slow traffic in Truro on the A390 Highertown around the County Hall roundabout
    • Delays are expected near Saltash, at the Carkeel roundabout on the A38
    • On the A30 near Penryn, there's slow traffic on the approaches to the Treluswell roundabout

    • Paington Road in Stoke Gabriel is blocked in both directions between Lembury Road and Aish Road due to a fallen tree and an accident
    • At Drumbridges, on the A38 Exeter-bound, there are reports of a broken-down lorry on the exit slip road
    • In Bampton, High Street is blocked both directions due to a fallen tree and power cables at South Molton Road
    • Fallen power cables have partially blocked Beach Road in Woolacombe around Springfield Road.
    • Delays expected in Plymouth at Bretonside, which is closed inbound between Exeter Street and Hawkers Avenue for cabling work

    Devon and Cornwall Police and Crime Commissioner Alison Hernandez is facing a third vote of no confidence.

    The vote, at Devon County Council's Cabinet meeting, follows comments she made on a BBC radio phone-in about armed civilians and terrorists.

    The Conservative commissioner has survived the two previous confidence votes by Plymouth City Council and a police scrutiny panel.

    Ms Hernandez has described the new motion is "naked politicking".

  14. Bideford evacuation after 'suspicious' package discovery in charity shoppublished at 08:06 British Summer Time 13 September 2017

    Thirty buildings in Bideford were evacuated on Tuesday after the discover of a "suspicious device" in a charity shop.

    Devon and Cornwall Police evacuated buildings in parts of Mill Street and set up a 100m (330ft) cordon after they were called to reports of a suspicious device found within a donation bag.

    The suspicious object, contained in a donated book, was destroyed by a bomb disposal team and the cordon lifted just before 18:30.
