Fish have "complex" individual personalities, according to scientists from Cornwall.
Tests to study how the tiny Trinidadian guppies react to stress showed that while they become more cautious, "differences between individuals remained intact."
Dr Tom Houslay, from the Centre for Ecology and Conservation at the University of Exeter's Penryn Campus in Cornwall, said the guppies had different strategies for coping.
"Many attempt to hide, others try to escape, some explore cautiously, and so on," he said.
A decision on whether to spend about £2m revamping a shopping centre in Newton Abbot will be made today.
Teignbridge District Council bought the centre in Market Walk last year.
Some local people have objected to the plans, which include re-cladding shop fronts and replacing low-level canopies with glazed cover.

Police have appealed for witnesses following a fatal crash in Cornwall on Saturday.
Two people died and five others were injured - three of them seriously - in the collision involving three vehicles on the A39 near Camelford.
Devon and Cornwall Police said a grey Jaguar XJ Super V was travelling towards Camelford when it was in collision with an oncoming blue BMW on a left-hand bend. The Jaguar then struck a Nissan Qashqai VI.
The driver of the Jaguar - a 30-year-old man from Helston - died and two passengers, including a 15-year-old boy from Port Isaac and a 40-year-old man from Delabole, were airlifted to Derriford Hospital where they are described as "serious but stable".
A 70-year-old woman from Sevenoaks in Kent who was in the BMW, also died following the crash and her husband sustained life-threatening injuries.
A couple from Essex, who were in the Nissan, received minor injuries and were treated at the scene.

A supersonic car designed to break the world land speed record, is being unloaded in Cornwall today.
The Bloodhound, was brought to Newquay Airport from its workshop in Bristol on Thursday to prepare for test drives next month.
Engineers are hoping the racing car, which is powered by a jet engine and a rocket, will reach one thousand miles per hour.
A cloudy start to the day, which could perhaps produce a few spots of drizzle first thing.
Through the day the cloud will start to break up, perhaps allowing a few brighter spells in the west, with a maximum temperature of 20C (68F).
Two men - thought to be from Afghanistan - have been discovered hiding in a ship off the Devon coast.
The stowaways were found in a fridge on the ship about 20 miles south of Start Point last night.
The men were airflifted to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth for medical checks and will be seen seen by UK Border Agency Staff later this morning.
