  3. South West MEP 'not a rebel'published at 17:16 British Summer Time 9 October 2017

    BBC Radio Cornwall

A Conservative MEP in the south west says she's disappointed the party has withdrawn the whip after she supported a motion in Strasbourg that Brexit talks had not made sufficient progress.

Julie Girling says she's not a rebel and hasn't altered her beliefs.

Ms Girling and South East England MEP Richard Ashworth were suspended from the party after supporting a resolution in Strasbourg declaring that "sufficient progress" had not been made in the Brexit talks to move on to discussions on the future relationship between the UK and EU.

In a statement to BBC Radio Cornwall Ms Girling said she'd been active in the party for 40 years - 20 as an elected representative - and for 39 of those years the Conservative policy has been pro-Europe.

She added: "It's the party that's changed, not me, but that does not stop me feeling sadness that such a response (withdrawing the whip) was felt to be appropriate."

It found that some of the worst blackspots are in the agriculture and hospitality sectors with six in ten workers currently not paying into a pension.

The TUC says huge numbers of people in work are missing out on a decent retirement because they earn less than £10,000 - the level of earnings at which employers must enrol someone into a workplace pension.

  7. Offensive jackets point to 'lad culture', student sayspublished at 16:02 British Summer Time 9 October 2017

A University of Exeter student says he fears students wore jackets covered in offensive comments because of a "lad culture" at one of the campuses.

The messages, written on high-visibility tabards and worn on a night out by Camborne School of Mines students, included comments about the Las Vegas massacre, the war in Syria, rape and Nazi swastikas.

Falmouth campus student, 24-year-old Alex Welsford, said he feared it was part of a "lad culture" at the campus.

He said first year students at the mining school would go on a "pub crawl" wearing "hard hats and high-vis vests scrawled on by the second and third-year students".

"The comments are absolutely disgusting. There is a limit and this went way beyond that limit."

However, other students claimed social media comments had blown what was "drunken exploits" and "banter" out of proportion.

  8. Parking charges "against the spirit" of Dartmoorpublished at 15:40 British Summer Time 9 October 2017

    BBC Radio Devon

It's being claimed that parking charges on Dartmoor will adversely affect local people and may not even make economic sense.

The National Park Authority's replacing honesty boxes with pay and display machines in four car parks - Meldon, Newbridge, Postbridge and Haytor- even though half of the people asked in a public consultation said they were against the idea.

Simon Rines is a Buckfastleigh Town Councillor, and says he's concerned about the effect on regular visitors.

"If you want people to be walking and active, it's putting a big disincentive in, and it could cost some people around £240 a year to do what they're doing at the moment at no charge," he says.

"It sort of goes against the spirit of what the moors are about."

  16. Simmonds form impresses Exeter coachespublished at 14:04 British Summer Time 9 October 2017

    Brent Pilnick
    BBC Sport

Sam Simmonds' form could give Exeter a tough choice to make at number eight when Thomas Waldrom returns to fitness, says forwards coach Rob Hunter.

The 22-year-old scored in the 34-24 win over Newcastle to take his tally to eight tries in his past 12 games.

Simmonds has deputised for the injured Waldrom, who was the Premiership's top try-scorer in 2015 and 2016.

"It may be they play together, but however that works out it is a very nice position to be in," Hunter said.

"When you start to have two guys threatening the defensive line like that it actually creates space for the others," Hunter added to BBC Radio Devon.

"We'll be working hard to see if we can get space to get them both on and hopefully both scoring."
