    BBC News Online

Wax figures that were used by medieval pilgrims to help cure their health problems have been reproduced thanks to new equipment at the University of Exeter.

The team in the Digital Humanities Laboratory have made 3D images of nine of the largest and most complete figures from the period using digital technology.

    wax figures

Pilgrims used to hang wax figures of body parts on the tombs of saints as a way of curing their ailments.

The Reformation meant the practice ended and most of the wax figures disappeared or were destroyed.

However in 1943, about 1,000 were found in Exeter Cathedral when it was inspected for bomb damage following an air raid.

They're now kept in climate-controlled conditions.

A spokesman for the force told the BBC at the time of inspection they were experiencing an unusually high number of calls because of recent terror attacks nationwide.
