    A private aircraft was damaged after it "flipped" on to its wing during landing, a report has revealed.

    It happened at Winscott Barton Flying Club in Bideford in Devon after "a strong gust of wind" caused the aircraft to "pitch forward uncontrollably and flip".

    The pilot said the "strong downward force" meant the landing wasn't recoverable on 14 May, according to the Air Accidents Investigation Branch's monthly report. , external

    The pilot and the one passenger on-board sustained minor injuries.

    Exeter's Henry Slade will start at inside centre for England against Argentina on Saturday.

    Slade, who has impressed for the Chiefs so far this season, has a chance to show what he can do in an England shirt as boss Eddie Jones rests Owen Farrell.

    He will start alongside Bath's Jonathan Joseph in midfield as England prepare for the first of three autumn internationals.

    Slade has ousted Saracens' Alex Lozowski to start at 12, with Ben Youngs and George Ford resuming their half-back combination.

    “This is our best 23 selected in what is our most important game this year," said head coach Jones.

    It will be Slade's eighth cap for England and the fifth time he has started for the national side.

    Meanwhile teammate Harry Williams is named among England's replacements.

    South West Water has been criticised by people who say the company's ignoring problems of sewage flooding into their homes.

    In Par, in Cornwall, manhole covers on combined drains regularly lift up during heavy rainfall, spewing sewage on to the road and into nearby homes, according to one local resident on St Blazey Road.

    South West Water says it recognises that internal sewer flooding is very distressing, and minimising the likelihood of it happening is a key priority.

    It added it dealt with 165 incidences of internal sewer flooding in 2016/17 and has a target to reduce this to 135 by 2020.

    The 36-year-old former plumber from Braunton broke a lumber vertebra in his back in the accident yesterday morning.

    "Waves this size don't happen that often... it's just unfortunate, but I'm sure I'll be back out there in no time," he said.

    A surfer from Devon has broken his back after being wiped out by a huge wave off Portugal.

    Andrew Cotton from Braunton was surfing at Nazare when the accident happened on Wednesday morning.

    Describing what happened on social media, the 36-year-old part-time plumber said: "What can I say, I got a little excited this morning and ended up having possibly the worst wipeout, impact-wise, of my life."

    Cotton, who is known as a "big wave surfer", rode a 30m (98ft) wave in Nazare four years ago.

    Despite breaking his L2 vertebra and admitting his back "hurts a little bit", the surfer said he's looking forward to getting back out on the water.

    Police are investigating an aggravated burglary after a "ram-raid" at a shop in Torquay.

    Officers were called to Boots on Union street at about 02:50 after the store alarm was triggered.

    It's believed a silver car was used to gain access and five men entered the store, police said.

    Officers remain at the scene while crime investigation work takes place.

    Witnesses are being asked to come forward.

    Devon and Cornwall Police must improve its call-handling systems, the police watchdog has said.

    Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary (HMIC) says the force needs to improve its understanding of the demands on its services.

    It is rated 'good' in keeping people safe and reducing crime which is better than last year when it was told it 'required improvement'.

    The force told the BBC at the time of inspection it was experiencing an unusually high number of calls because of recent terror attacks nationwide. It added it was working to improve the system.

    The parents of a Devon schoolboy, killed in a freak ski lift accident in France, have welcomed a coroner's verdict that their son was unlawfully killed.

    Kieran Brookes from Bovey Tracey was on a school skiing trip with Torquay Boys' Grammar School in 2011.

    He was strangled by his rucksack when it became entangled in a ski lift, an inquest has heard.

    He was suspended in mid air for four minutes as he fought to free himself.

    Kieran's father, Nick, said "It's a big step forward and now it's time to move on with our lives - a new type of normal for ourselves, our daughter and the rest of our family."

    A 5% hike in council tax from April and cuts of £75m over the next four years are being proposed by Cornwall Council.

    Cabinet members will discuss the budget plans next week, which would see 3% of the precept rise go exclusively to help fund social care.

    The increase would mean an average Band D household paying an extra £1.34 a week.
