  10. Great Western Railway franchise could be split uppublished at 12:38 Greenwich Mean Time 29 November 2017

    Hamish Marshall
    BBC Spotlight

Great Western, the rail franchise that runs the majority of services in Devon and Cornwall, could be split up under new government proposals.

The government is consulting on the proposals.

The Great Western Railway services stretches from London to the likes of Worcester, Swansea and into Devon and Cornwall. So, it is large and how it could be broken up is complicated.

In 2015, when he was chancellor, George Osborne floated the idea of a separate Devon and Cornwall franchise. However, that led to concerns that this would stop any cross-subsidy from the more profitable parts of the franchise which are closer to London.

Other options include splitting the inter-city services from the branch lines.

But passengers will ask will it mean more services, more reliable services cheaper tickets, or an end to overcrowding. Those will be questions raised during the consultation.

  11. Rifle-pointing road rage van driver 'remarkably stupid'published at 12:21 Greenwich Mean Time 29 November 2017

A road rage van driver who pointed a gun through his passenger window at another driver and then tried to blame his dog has been branded as "remarkably stupid" by a judge.

  15. 'Lost' rail routes 'may be 'restored': Analysispublished at 11:44 Greenwich Mean Time 29 November 2017

Neil Gallacher, Business & Industry Correspondent
    BBC Spotlight

Railway lines closed in the 1960s could be reopened if they boost the economy, the government has said.

The plan forms part of a wider rail strategy under which the government will consider splitting up two of the biggest train operators. The move would affect Great Western, which operates routes in the South West.

However, the government appears to think it's more important to restore disused rail capacity in the Exeter area than to reconnect Tavistock to the rail network, as has been long hoped by many.

Ministers have today said that Beeching cuts - where some 4,000 miles of rail routes were closed in the 1960s, mainly in rural areas - could be reversed around Exeter, which may indicate the possibility of more capacity in the Exmouth junction area.

They're also talking about splitting up the huge GWR franchise, although fears that small local lines might have to end up in a franchise all of their own seem to have receded.
