A Devon MP says the departure of one of Theresa May's closest allies from cabinet is a "huge blow" for the prime minister.

Damian Green was asked by Mrs May to resign after an official inquiry concluded he broke the ministerial code when he gave misleading statements about the discovery of pornography on a computer in his office.

He denies downloading or viewing pornography.

The Conservative MP for Totnes Sarah Wollaston says Mr Green "had to step down".

"He was a very close, long-standing colleague and friend and supporter, so I'll know that she'll be disappointed that he's gone. But we have a ministerial code, we have investigations and that was the point on which he left. There was a conclusion that he broke the ministerial code."

  4. Environment secretary to open new Dawlish flood schemepublished at 08:49 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December 2017

    BBC Radio Devon

The Environment Secretary Michael Gove is visiting Devon later to open the new Dawlish Warren flood scheme.

It's hoped the project will reduce flood risk to 2,800 homes and businesses around the Exe Estuary, as well as the main rail line into south Devon and Cornwall.

He'll also announce work will begin next year on a £12m scheme in Exmouth and that £1.6m will go towards schemes in Plymouth and Whimple.

The schemes are part of the government's continued £115m investment drive to reduce flood risk to 15,000 homes and businesses in Devon and Cornwall by 2021.

Ahead of the visit, Mr Gove said 100,000 more properties are "already better protected from flooding and that figure is set to triple in under four years".

"Dawlish Warren is only one of 350 new defences built since 2015 and work continues on schemes across the country - all of which are helping to bring peace of mind to communities, as well as investment and opportunities."

  6. Torbay homelessness a 'sad indictment of 2017'published at 08:31 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December 2017

    Kirk England
    BBC Radio Devon

More needs to be done to help the homeless in Torbay, according to one local charity.

Humanity Torbay - which supports rough sleepers - says the situation is at "crisis point".

Ellie Waugh works for the charity and says it "just isn't right".

"This is not the Victorian age. When I've got people crying and phoning me, telling me they wish they were dead or they were in prison rather than out on the streets - that's a really sad indictment of 2017 in this country."

Torbay Council insists those who need help are getting it and it's working hard to improve things.

The government also says it's spending more than £1bn nationally - up to 2020 - to make sure no-one goes without a bed for a night.

Devon and Cornwall Police has said the mood within the force was "extremely low" after attending a crash that killed a three-year-old boy.

The road between Fork Cross and Folaton Gate was closed for investigation work.

Ch Insp Adrian Leisk said despite the low mood, police are "focusing on the need to complete [the] investigation to the highest standard".

Frankie, who is homeless in the Bay, said: "You get nights when people insult you - they tell you to get a job, it's not nice.

"A lot of us don't have people around us for Christmas, it's a very bad time of year for us."

Organisation Humanity Torbay says not enough is being done to tackle the issue and get vulnerable people off the streets.

But Torbay Council insists it's working hard with other local agencies to make sure those without a home are given support.
