    A man was treated for smoke inhalation after a caravan fire in Ottery St Mary, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service has said.

    Crews were called to the "well alight" caravan in Higher Metcombe at about 16:00.

    Ambulance staff also attended the blaze to help administer first aid for the casualty.

    Crews removed cylinders they had deemed safe and isolated the electricity in the caravan.

    All sailings of the St Mawes Ferry on Wednesday have been cancelled due to "adverse seas conditions".

    There's bad weather on the way for the South West, with particular concern about strong winds and high tides from Storm Eleanor.

    Severe gales are expected on the coasts with squalls bringing spells of intense rainfall and very strong gusts.

  6. Property left with smoke damage after 'laptop fire'published at 18:30 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January 2018

    A property has sustained smoke damage after a fire "started in a laptop".

    It happened at about 14:30 in the village of Denbury between Totnes and Newton Abbot, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said.

    On arrival, the property was "heavily smoke logged", the fire service said.

    The laptop that started the fire was "destroyed".

    The A39 has closed in north Devon while a new 200ft-long retaining wall is built.

    The road is shut for 13 weeks near Shirwell, north of Barnstaple.

    Devon County Council said the work was essential to stop an embankment from "completely collapsing".

    As well as the concrete retaining wall, the £200,000 scheme also involves drainage improvements and resurfacing.

    Traffic diversions are in place.

    The public toilets around Plymouth Hoe are set to be revamped this year, the city's council has said.

    Improvement works will take place on the loos at West Hoe Park, the Hoe Promenade and Tinside.

    The work will cost £709,755 and is being funded through a Plymouth City Council programme.

    The new loos will include unisex toilets with mother and baby changing facilities, toilets for those with disabilities and showers.

    Similar toilets were installed last year at Southway, Richmond Walk and Devil's Point and are able to be automatically scheduled to open and close to avoid anti-social behaviour.

    The first set of improvement works is due to be finished by the spring.

    A wooden lodge has been "completely destroyed" in a fire, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service has said.

    It happened at about 14:00 in Cheriton Bishop.

    An elderly man received oxygen therapy and was left in the hands of ambulance staff, the fire service said.

    A woman in her 80s has had her purse stolen during a "despicable" distraction burglary in Axminster, police say.

    Officers said the man, who claimed he was phone engineer, called at the property close to Waggs Plot at about 10:30 on Saturday while pretending to be working on phone lines.

    He fled the property with the purse containing cash when the victim said someone else was at home.

    He was described as white, aged between 50 and 55, about 5ft 11in tall, of thick-set build and with brown, greying hair.

    Det Con Matt Burnell, of Honiton CID, said: "This crime was pretty despicable given the age and the vulnerability of the victim, plus the deception used to get into the home."

    Police investigating a road crash near Totnes last month in which a three-year-old boy was killed are trying to trace a van that was seen in the area.

    Reuben Williams died when the car being driven by his mother collided head-on with another vehicle near Totnes, between Fork Cross and Folaton Gate, on 20 December.

    Devon and Cornwall Police said they were "still seeking witnesses to the collision and urge the public to come forward".

    Officers added: "In particular, they would like to speak to the occupants of a white Transit-type van with a trailer that was parked in a lay-by near to Fork Cross."

    Reuben's parents have paid tribute to their "excited and energetic" boy.

    Two men - a 30-year-old man from Brixham and a 38-year-old man from Torquay - were arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. They were released under investigation pending further inquiries.

    Five people have been injured in a multiple-vehicle crash on the A30 in east Devon, firefighters say.

    Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said, external crews were called to the four-vehicle crash scene at about 14:40 on the Exeter-bound carriageway.

    The service said hydraulic cutting gear was used to release a male from one of the vehicles, and firefighters assisted one female from another vehicle.

    It added: "There were five walking wounded who were being assessed by ambulance personnel on scene."

    There's bad weather on the way for the South West, with particular concern about strong winds and high tides from Storm Eleanor coinciding this evening and tomorrow morning.

    Severe gales are expected on the coasts this evening and overnight, with squalls bringing spells of intense rainfall and very strong gusts.

    The Environment Agency has issued flood alerts, external for the north Devon and north Cornwall coasts.

    It said 30ft waves and 60mph winds could possibly combine with high tides, resulting in hazardous conditions in exposed locations.

    It added that coastal flooding was likely in north Cornwall during Wednesday morning's high tide, with Bude was particularly at risk.

    People are being asked to take care near the coast.

    The agency said it had opened its incident rooms in Bodmin and Exeter, external and it had "teams out on the ground".

    The mayor of Looe has led tributes to a woman who died in a bungalow fire in Cornwall.

    The woman, named locally as Susan Crapp, died at her home in Barbican Hill, East Looe, on New Year's Eve. Her two dogs also died in the fire.

    Mayor Armand Tom said: "She lived on her own but had her two dogs.

    "She didn't bother anybody, she was a nice lady and worked locally all her life."

    Local councillor Edwina Hannaford, who lives in the street where the fire broke out, said it was "catastrophic" and thanked firefighters who tackled it.

    The cause of the fire is being treated as unexplained and an investigation is continuing.

    Sections of roof were damaged in high winds last week.

    It has been an exceptionally busy night for firefighters across Devon who have fought a series of fires in Exeter, Paignton, Newton Abbot, Dawlish and Bradninch.
