    Surfers and bodyboarders are three times more likely to have bacteria in their guts that will resist antibiotic treatment, University of Exeter research has revealed.

    The BBC went to Challaborough in south Devon to see if surfers there agreed with the findings.

    Guernseyman John Castle, known for years for his campaign work with Greenpeace, has died in hospital in Plymouth of cancer. He was 67.

    Mr Castle was involved in many Greenpeace campaigns, from those against nuclear testing on the French Pacific atolls, to anti-whaling missions on board the charity's ship Rainbow Warrior.

    Mr Castle had not been involved with the organisation for a number of years and was living in south east Cornwall.

    An anti-hunt protester is recovering from a broken nose after an incident which took place in south Devon at the weekend.

    The man, who is from Cornwall and in his 40s, sustained facial injuries and was taken to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth.

    Police said the incident took place near a farm in South Pool, in the South Hams area, at about 15:40 on Saturday.

    Officers have appealed for witnesses.

    A popular cycle trail in Plymouth is being closed temporarily for safety reasons.

    Plym Valley Trail will be closed between Coypool and Plymbridge Wood car park for 10 days.

    Work will be carried out to improve Cann Quarry Canal which runs alongside.

    Large trees have fallen into the waterway over time and have led to flooding during heavy rain. The trees will be removed whilst other safety work also takes place.

    The path will re-open over the weekend, with work resuming next week.

    A "ground-breaking" new project is set to see cancer patients across the South West being treated in their own homes by paramedics from South Western Ambulance Service.

    Staff said it was the first time an ambulance service and Macmillan Cancer Support had worked together to train and support paramedics and clinicians to deliver this care.

    It would mean cancer patients and those with palliative care needs, or who were close to the end of their life, would be able to stay at home rather than being taken to emergency departments, managers said.

    Exeter Chiefs fly-half Gareth Steenson has agreed a new two-year deal with the defending Premiership champions.

    Steenson, 33, is the club's record points scorer since joining from Cornish Pirates in summer 2010.

    The Northern Irishman, who kicked the winning penalty in last season's Premiership final, also helped Chiefs to promotion from the Championship.

    "I've seen the place develop hugely to the position we are in now," he said. "To sign a new deal is very exciting."

    A man who was arrested in connection with an "unexplained" death in Exeter has been released on bail, police say., external

    Officers were called to a property on Mount Pleasant Road at about 05:50 on 12 January after reports of a deceased man there.

    The man has yet to be formally identified and his next of kin are being sought.

    A 44-year-old man who was arrested in connection with the death was bailed until 9 February pending further inquiries, police said.

    Firefighters are reminding people to get in touch if they have plans for bonfires after crews were called out to reports of "smoke and flames" in Cornwall on Sunday.

    Crews from Tolvaddon and Perranporth stations were sent to Perranporth at about 19:50.

    On arrival, firefighters discovered "controlled burnings that members of the public had failed to inform us of", Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service said.

    It added that people needed to inform the service of any bonfire plans to avoid sending fire engines to false alarms, external when they could be "responding to a real emergency".

    The wet weather wiped out local football action in Cornwall this weekend, with weeks of postponements now giving teams and fixture secretaries a real headache.

    Truro City's game with Concord Rangers was called off, as were all the games in the Peninsula Premier League, and all the matches involving Cornish sides in the Peninsula West Division.

    Not even the Cornwall Senior Cup survived, with all games scheduled for Saturday also postponed.

    Not only is the continued wet weather causing big problems for grounds' staff, but the clubs themselves are also losing out financially: empty grounds and empty clubhouses are never good for the game.

    Then there's the league secretaries and officials who face the increasingly mammoth task of rearranging the fixtures. They'll all be hoping for dryer weather soon.

    Lewis Bennelick was last seen at about 14:00 on Saturday at his home in Forest Road.

    He is described as white, 5ft 4in tall, of medium build, with mousy brown short hair and blue eyes.

    He has a scar on the middle of his forehead and a tattoo on the back of his neck, his mother said.

    He also has a Chinese symbol behind his right ear and visible tattoos on his arms.

    Lewis was last seen wearing blue jeans, black Adidas trainers and a black jacket with blue on the inside.

    Anyone with information is being asked to call 999.
