    It is estimated about 175 jobs could be affected in Devon and Cornwall with the liquidation of construction giant Carillion.

    The company has maintenance contracts with prisons - including Dartmoor - and military bases in the region.

    The government advice today to Carillion staff is to go to work as normal and that they will be paid.

    The liquidation move came after talks between the firm, its lenders and the government failed to reach a deal to save the UK's second biggest construction company.

    The company has 43,000 staff worldwide - 20,000 in the UK.

    But for those who need to catch up on the series, here's one water cooler moment so far involving Devon resident, former Tory MP and past Strictly Come Dancing contestant Ann Widdecombe, who said that Meghan Markle was "trouble".

    You may have heard about Prince Harry's engagement to Meghan Markle in November - the pair are due to marry on 19 May.

    But, in a conversation about the couple, Ann Widdecombe said she didn't like Markle's "background" or "attitude".

    "I worry. I add it all up and I'm uneasy," she added.

    She faced a backlash from viewers, who were quick to jump to Markle's defence.

    Police in St Austell have warned members of the public following a string of offences, external on Imerys sites.

    Imerys is the world largest producer of china clay, particularly from the mines and quarries located in the Cornwall and Devon areas.

    South West Water has instructed bailiffs to recover the debts of more than 3,400 customers in the past three years.

    The figures, obtained by the BBC, also show the use of bailiffs has fallen significantly year on year, from 2,230 enforcements issued in the financial year ending in 2016, to just 284 so far in the financial year ending in 2018.

    The company said the drop was because it was working hard to help customers who are struggling to pay the highest average bills in the country.

    Police found the pilot safe and well.

  9. Man rescued from quarry after trying to save stuck dogpublished at 07:21 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January 2018

    A man has been rescued after becoming stranded in a quarry whilst trying to save his dog, firefighters say, external.

    It happened in Trusham, just outside Chudleigh, at about 14:30 on Sunday.

    Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service received reports of a "dog stuck on a ledge" in a quarry.

    On arrival, the fire service said the owner of the dog had tried to rescue it himself "by swimming across the water-filled quarry and had then become stranded himself".

    A specialist rescue team recovered the owner before rescuing the bull mastiff dog by lowering it with rope.

    The owner was left in the care of paramedics.

    Neither the owner or the dog is believed to have been hurt.

    Five men have been charged in connection with an armed robbery in Truro, police say.

    They have been charged with robbery, conspire to commit robbery and having an imitation firearm with intent to commit an indictable offence.

    All five men are due to appear at Truro Magistrates' Court later.

    A masked gang raided Michael Spiers Jewellers shop in the city on Wednesday.
