    Firefighters are still at the scene of a barn fire in Yealmpton.

    People have been evacuated from some nearby homes, while residents in others have been warned to close their windows due to a toxic gas coming from the blaze.

    Emergency services were first called to the barn, beside Kitley Farm, at about 09:00.

    Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said there were gas cylinders on site and a diesel tank, believed to be holding up to 500 litres of fuel.

    Police are appealing for witnesses to an assault on an anti-hunt protester in Devon.

    Sidney Leigh, in his 40s and from Cornwall, was taken to Plymouth's Derriford Hospital with facial injuries on Saturday afternoon.

    The assault reportedly happened near a farm in South Pool, near Hallsands.

    Devon and Cornwall Police said in a statement they "have become aware of tensions relating to a number of local hunts".

    A spokesman added: "We are aware of the sensitivities and the high-emotions that are linked to these incidents. We wish to reassure you that we will act impartially and promptly to any incident reported to us."

    A 31-year old Redruth man has been arrested on suspicion of double murder and fraud after a man and a woman were found dead, more than a year-and-a-half apart in a Buckinghamshire village, police say.

    Peter Farquhar, 69, died in Maids Moreton near Buckingham, on October 26 2015, and Ann Moore-Martin, 83, died on May 12 2017, Thames Valley Police said. Their cause of their deaths is "undetermined".

    The Redruth man, who has not been named, was arrested on suspicion of two counts of murder, two counts of conspiracy to murder, two counts of suspicion of fraud by false representation, one count of conspiracy to defraud and one count of burglary.

    A 27-year-old man from Towcester, Northamptonshire, and a 22-year-old man from Milton Keynes have also been arrested in connection with the inquiry.

    Officers said a property near Redruth was being searched on Tuesday morning along with three others in different locations in England.

    We all need to cut down on single-use plastic now, a leading councillor is warning.

    Sue James, Cornwall Council's cabinet member for Environment and Public Protection, is calling on businesses and residents to make changes.

    Ms James said the government's recent announcements of plans to eradicate needless plastic waste were a step in the right direction but that "doing it dreckly was not going far enough".

    South West MEPs are joining others at the European Parliament today to vote on conservation measures for fisheries, which campaigners say could leave dolphins and whales at risk.

    Many changes have been set out to regulations that are supposed to protect the mammals from dying in fishing gear - so-called "by-catch".

    Police are investigating a suspected arson attack in Chudleigh.

    Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said it received several calls from members of the public about a vehicle that was well alight on a bridge near Lears Lane just before 05:00.

    The blaze was put out and the incident handed over to police, firefighters said.

    Firms working for failed construction giant Carillion on purely private sector deals will only have two days of government support, Cabinet Office Minister David Lidington has warned.

    Carillion spent £952m with local suppliers in 2016 and used an extensive network of small firms, who are now waiting to learn if they will be paid.

    Employers' groups are trying to assess the exposure of small firms, but said many faced financial hardship. Critics want a review into the crisis.

    Britain's second largest construction firm, which employs 20,000 people in the UK, went bust on Monday with debts of about £1.5bn.

    It employs about 175 people in Devon and Cornwall.
