    Rain overnight has caused some problems with "icy stretches" on Devon's roads, Devon County Council has said.

    At Rundlestone, the road surface temperature has been recorded at -1.2C (29F).

    Drivers are being warned to take extra care across the county.

  2. Man 'loses two teeth' after assault in Exeterpublished at 09:40 Greenwich Mean Time 16 February 2018

    A man has "lost two teeth" after an assault in Exeter, police have said.

    It happened between 02:00 and 03:00 on 27 January outside the Jack Wills shop on the High Street.

    Police added that the 20-year-old victim received a large cut to his head and lost consciousness during the "unprovoked" assault.

    Anyone with information is being asked to contact Devon and Cornwall Police via 101.

  3. New community bus for Wadebridge after government grantpublished at 09:24 Greenwich Mean Time 16 February 2018

    People living in Wadebridge will be able to use a new community bus that has been funded through a government grant.

    The vehicle - which cost £69,000 - will be used by the over 50s for day trips, the local secondary school and will serve as part of a weekly community bus scheme.

    Local charity, Concern Wadebridge, bid for the money and its chairman Alan Weeks said it's "vital" to the community.

    "Transport in this area is bad for people trying to do simple things like get to hospital. A lot of the people live in small country areas around Wadebridge and that makes them more isolated."

  6. Dartmoor rescuers 'saddened' by body findpublished at 09:11 Greenwich Mean Time 16 February 2018

    Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team says it is "deeply saddened" after the discovery of a body of a man in Longdown, near Exeter on Thursday.

    Water rescue specialists assisted Devon and Cornwall Police in the search for missing University of Exeter student, Rory Cattermole, who was last seen on Valentine's Day.

    His family has been informed but formal identification is yet to take place.

    On the A379 at Modbury there are reports there are two accidents - one on either side of the town. There's also ice in the area.

    On the A374 between the Trerulefoot roundabout and the A387, the road is partially blocked due to an accident. Traffic is slow-moving and there are also reports of ice in the area.

    • In Carnon Downs on Forth Coth, there are reports the traffic lights have failed. Drivers are asked to approach the area with care.

    Some South Western Railway train services will be affected today - and across the weekend - due to industrial action.

    The RMT union has called for a work to rule and ban on rest day working, from today, until Monday.

    The industrial action stops short of strike action.

    It's part of an ongoing dispute over safety and the role of train guards.

    The company runs services between Exeter and London Waterloo.

    Homeowners in the South West are being warned intense bouts of flooding are set to become more frequent.

    The Environment Agency has launched the Flood Action Campaign to raise awareness., external

    Younger people are being encouraged to check flood risks as research shows 18 to 34 year olds are at the highest risk of fatality due to being less likely to perceive personal risk, the agency said.

    Met Office records show intense storms are becoming more frequent, sea levels are rising, and since 1910 there have been 17 record breaking rainfall months or seasons - with nine since 2000.

    In 2017, flash flooding saw torrents of water sweep through the Cornish village of Coverack.

    Environment Agency chief executive Sir James Bevan said: “Climate change is likely to mean more frequent and intense flooding.

    "Floods destroy – lives, livelihoods, and property. Our flood defences reduce the risk of flooding, and our flood warnings help keep communities safe when it threatens.

    "But we can never entirely eliminate the risk of flooding. Checking your flood risk is the first step to protecting yourself, your loved ones and your home.”

    A university has said its thoughts are with the family and friends of a missing student after police found the body of a man in the search for him.

    Rory Cattermole, 20, was last seen on Valentine's Day.

    Devon and Cornwall Police and the Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team found a man's body in Longdown, near Exeter, on Thursday afternoon.

    Rory's family has been informed. Formal identification has yet to take place.

    The University of Exeter, where Rory is a student, said its "thoughts are with his friends and family at this difficult time".

    The Environment Agency has warned intense bouts of flooding, such as the flash flooding seen in the Cornish village of Coverack in July, will become more frequent.

    "The warning follows a pattern of severe flooding over the past 10 years linked to an increase in extreme weather events as the country’s climate changes," the agency said.

    Flooding emergencies are listed as one of the nation’s major threats, external leading the agency to launch its Flood Action Campaign, external today, to raise awareness of flooding risks.

    Met Office research has found in England and Wales there is a one in three chance of a new monthly rainfall record in at least one region each winter.

    Prof Adam Scaife said: “The Met Office supercomputer was used to simulate thousands of possible winters, some of them much more extreme than we’ve yet witnessed. This gave many more extreme events than have happened in the real world, helping us work out how severe things could get.”

    The father of a man who died in police custody has welcomed misconduct proceedings against six police officers and staff, but has expressed disappointment the hearings were "forced" on police.

    Thomas Orchard, who had schizophrenia, died in hospital a week after he suffered a cardiac arrest in a cell at an Exeter police station in 2012.

    His father Ken Orchard said: "If police attitudes had been better they would never ever have put a belt of that type across someone's face, particularly across the face of someone who was having a mental health crisis.

    "We're pleased that disciplinary hearings will be held and we're disappointed in Devon and Cornwall Police that they had to be forced into holding them."

    The Police Federation, which represents rank and file officers, said it was "extremely disappointed" with both the decision and the delay, and would continue to "support and represent the officers".

    A 28-year-old man has gone missing from Plymouth, police have said.

    Matthew Edwards was last seen in the Derriford area of the city at about 21:00 on Thursday.

    Police are concerned for his welfare.

    Matthew is described as a white male, about 5ft 5in (1.7m) tall and of slim build. He has short brown hair and is believed to be wearing an all beige tracksuit.

    He also has a distinctive black star tattoo on the left hand side of his neck.

    Anyone with information is being asked to contact Devon and Cornwall Police via 101.

    Two people were winched to safety by a coastguard helicopter after getting stuck on a rock at Hartland Quay, North Devon, yesterday.

    The coastguard was alerted by a 999 call at about 15:00, when the sea was described as "extremely rough".

    The two people were "in immediate danger," with waves crashing over them, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency said.

    Conditions were too dangerous to send a lifeboat, so the two people were winched to safety by helicopter at 15:43.

    They did not need any medical treatment, the coastguard added.

  19. 'NHS workers should park for free'published at 07:11 Greenwich Mean Time 16 February 2018

    Staff parking charges at Cornwall's main hospitals should be scrapped, according to a group of councillors that want the authority to put pressure on the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust to let NHS employees park for free.

    But the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust says staff pay less than the highest-charging trusts across the country and the fees are set according to their salary bands.

    Unite union's Deborah Hopkins said: "The expectation that staff, who are struggling to survive, and we know staff go to food banks, should have to pay to park at their place of work has always been anathema, and the staff are really struggling with the cost."
