    The gold command structure continues today for Devon & Cornwall Police in light of the impact of Storm Emma.

    Gold command structure is put in place in times of emergency or disaster, and is designed to improve the strategic planning of all emergency operations.

    The gold commander yesterday was Ch Supt Glen Mayhew, today Ch Supt Jim Nye, oversees all operations.

  3. Travel: Tricky conditions on Devon's roadspublished at 07:08 Greenwich Mean Time 2 March 2018

    • Tricky conditions on the A38 at Marley Head near South Brent.
    • The A38 at Haldon Hill and the A30 at Sowton near Okehampton have reopened but conditions are poor.
    • 15 HGVs remain parked on the A30 at Sowton Cross.
    • On the A385 between Paignton and Totnes, there are reports of two abandoned articulated lorries blocking the road.

    Devon and Cornwall Police say the road network remains extremely hazardous and is vulnerable to disruption.

    There is an amber weather warning for wind and snow in place across Devon and parts of Cornwall, the Met Office has said., external

    The amber warning is in place until 08:00.

    A yellow warning for snow and ice remains in place until midnight on Friday and includes all of Devon and most of Cornwall.

    Snow is still forecast for parts of East Cornwall and Devon today.

    It is expected to change to rain or sleet later with freezing rain in some places.

    It should be less cold with temperatures ranging between -1C (30F) and 7C (44F).

    Officers say they have been "humbled" by the "community spirited action" of people across the region.

    Drivers heading out in their 4x4 cars to support the rescue and recovery operations on the roads throughout the bad weather was highlighted.

    Ch Insp Adrian Leisk said: "We hear so much about division, but adversity really does bind us together. I am proud to live here."

    About 1,000 properties across South Devon are currently without power.

    Teignmouth, Kingsbridge and Modbury are all affected.

    Western Power Distribution says its engineers are working to fix the problems but is unsure when the power will be restored.

    Devon and Cornwall Police have rescued "hundreds of stranded motorists" overnight due to the "treacherous" icy roads and heavy snowfall.

    It added that people should take a more "literal interpretation of the word 'essential'" and stay put until roads are treated.

    There is disruption to most South West services.

    Great Western Railway is advising customers not to travel on many of its routes.

    There are currently no CrossCountry trains between Bristol Temple Meads and Plymouth.

    Passengers are advised to check with their rail company throughout the day before travelling.

    • On the A38 between Dobwalls and Trerulefoot there are very poor conditions.
    • The A38 in the Glynn Valley is now passable with care but watch out for abandoned vehicles.
    • Between Tavistock and Gunnislake the A390 is closed.
    • In Liskeard, the A390 Charter Way is very icy.
    • On Bodmin Moor near Blisland, the road between Tresarret and Key Bridge is reported to be impassable.

  15. Devon travel: Routes remain 'treacherous'published at 06:13 Greenwich Mean Time 2 March 2018

    Devon and Cornwall Police are telling drivers to not use the roads as many routes are treacherous, especially non-arterial routes and minor roads.

    The routes most affected:

    • On the M5 driving conditions are poor and are being made worse by very strong winds.
    • The A38 at Haldon Hill is open between Kennford and Chudleigh but conditions remain poor.
    • On the A38 at Marley Head, there is stationery traffic and drivers are stuck in their vehicles.
    • The A30 around Sourton remains blocked.
    • The A380 Telegraph Hill is closed between the Splatford Split and Kingsteignton.
    • The A303 is closed both directions between the A30 and the A358 near Marsh due to a serious crash. Drivers should use the A358 and then join the M5 at junction 25.

    Drivers are being advised to "stay put" until gritters and snow ploughs have cleared and treated Devon's roads.

    Devon County Council said there are many roads "blocked by snow" as well as abandoned vehicles left overnight.

    Stagecoach bus services across North Devon are currently suspended due to adverse weather conditions.

    The company said freezing rain is making roads "very slippery and dangerous".

    It added in Plymouth the only areas with buses running are:

    • City centre
    • Billacombe Road
    • St Budeaux
    • Milehouse
    • Derriford

    Elsewhere in Devon, the following services are not running:
