  1. Exeter fire had 'no link' to construction workpublished at 07:52 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March 2018

    BBC Radio Devon

    Fire in Exeter

A report into a major fire in Exeter city centre has revealed "no link" between the blaze and ongoing construction work.

The report which has been given to the BBC by the Health and Safety Executive confirms welding work was taking place in the building where the fire's believed to have started.

It says there's no evidence to link the fire to that work.

In 2016, the blaze spread through several buildings destroying them and one of the UK's oldest hotels, The Royal Clarence.

In 2017, fire investigators said the cause of the blaze would probably remain a mystery, because evidence of how it started was lost when the building next door - where the fire started - collapsed.

  4. Hang glider crashes into rockspublished at 07:11 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March 2018

A hang glider crashed into rocks leaving a man stuck on cliffs on the south-east Cornwall coast.

It happened above Freathy Beach on Tuesday and sparked a major rescue operation involving three RNLI lifeboat crews.

The man was found stuck on rocks above a narrow gully, with deep water either side, the RNLI said.

A crewman climbed up the rocks from a lifeboat to help the uninjured man down the cliff.

David Haines, lifeboat operations manager with Looe RNLI, said "Our volunteer crews practice kedging for this type of rescue where they need to control the lifeboat in confined spaces, kedging is a skilled technique where a light anchor is used to help manoeuvre the boat into position."

    Andrew Segal
    BBC Local Live

The "Beast from the East" snowy weather and Storm Emma will continue to affect motorists using the A379 in Devon because resurfacing work is behind schedule, Devon County Council says.

The work on Exeter Road in Dawish was due for completion on 19 March, but the council said freezing temperatures and poor weather had caused the loss of nine working days.

It added the delay in Dawlish would have a knock-on effect and lead to the postponement of other schemes on the same road, including: Teignmouth Hill and Iddesleigh Terrace in Dawlish, and The Strand, Exeter Road in Starcross.

All of these schemes were to be rescheduled for a later date, the council said.

Cornwall Council leader Adam Paynter has raised concerns that the lack of central government funding for Cornish schools could impact on children's opportunities.

Schools in Cornwall are among the worst funded in the country, something that the authority's Fair Funding #StandUpForCornwall campaign aims to highlight.

Mr Paynter said: "It's clearly unfair that Cornwall receives £1,645 less per pupil than the 10 best funded boroughs in inner London."

Negotiations are ongoing as to whether they would have the same protection in the EU, but Mr Griffiths said: "I can categorically state that this is the government's clear objective."

    Andrew Segal
    BBC Local Live

Train passengers travelling west of Truro will experience journeys taking about 30 minutes longer on average because of the closing of the main line to Penzance, and the St Ives branch line (pictured), next week.

Network Rail is closing the lines for four days to install new signalling systems ahead of new intercity express trains being introduced in the summer.

Train operator GWR said buses would replace trains while the work was carried out between Monday and Thursday.

Long distance services from London Paddington would terminate at Truro and replacement buses then used, it added.

Some train departure times were also due to be changed, and passengers were advised to check before they travelled, GWR said.

Trains are still to run from Truro to Falmouth.
