    The Environment Agency has issued a flood alert for the River Axe area, external.

    The agency said flooding was possible for the rivers Axe, Coly, Yarty, Umborne Brook, and coastal streams from Branscombe to Axmouth.

    An alert means "be prepared".

    A five-year plan to help boost the Teignbridge economy has been proposed by the local council.

    Proposals include lengthening times for businesses to trade and introducing free public WiFi.

    Council bosses hope the plans will increase customer spending. They also hope the project will continue the regeneration of Newton Abbot town centre.

    Subject to executive approval on 1 May, the plans are then expected to go out for public consultation during May and June.

    Devon County Council has the biggest gender pay gap of all the councils in the South West.

    A woman's average hourly rate is 17% lower than men's. This means they earn 83p for every £1 that men earn.

    In contrast, women working for Plymouth City Council earn 3% more than men on average.

    Devon County Council said that it had a high number of female part-time workers and six out of eight of its senior leadership team were women.

    At Cornwall Council, the average woman is paid 14.9% less than the average man.

    The local authority is female-dominated, with women making up more than half of higher-paid jobs and three-quarters of lower-paid jobs.

    Cornwall Council said it was an equal pay employer and its gap was largely because it had a greater proportion of women in lower graded roles.

    Police chiefs have hit back at claims a massive 90% rise in violent crime across Cornwall and Devon, external in the last nine years might be linked to ever decreasing officer numbers.

    In Devon and Cornwall there were 32,509 violent crimes reported in the year to September 2017 (the latest figures), a 91% rise from the 17,058 reports received in the year ending September 2009.

    However, over the same period the full-time equivalent number of police officers at the force has fallen by 18%, from 3,562 in September 2009 to 2,921 in September 2017, a loss of 641 officers.

    A statement from Tom Daley's representatives said: "Despite resting over the weekend, ongoing medical issues alongside a further injury in the pool last week has resulted in Tom and his training team agreeing that he should not compete in the individual platform diving event.

    "The technical dives in the individual event put enormous physical strain on Tom's body. Due to prior illness and with his hips being the determining factor, some of the dives Tom was due to demonstrate in the individual event would be too dangerous and impactful on his body."

    Daley said: "I am truly devastated not to be competing in the individual event. I have been training so hard for the Commonwealth Games, so this is a real disappointment for me."

  8. Free WiFi plans for Teignbridge town centrespublished at 09:07 British Summer Time 10 April 2018

    Plans to help boost the economy in Teignbridge, which include providing free public WiFi in town centres, has been backed by councillors.

    Teignbridge District Council hopes to install free public WiFi for Newton Abbot, Teignmouth and Dawlish town centres to increase their appeal and stimulate local spending.

    If successful, Ashburton, Bovey Tracey, Buckfastleigh, Chudleigh and Moretonhampstead could also benefit from public WiFi.

    Councillor Richard Keeling, chairman of the economic review group, said: "Key features of the plan are around improving the delivery of broadband, introducing free Wi-Fi in town centres and supporting the delivery of employment sites.”

    Away from competition, the big news this morning concerns world champion diver Tom Daley.

    The Englishman won't defend his Commonwealth individual 10m title on the Gold Coast because of a hip injury.

    The 23-year-old, who was looking to win the event for the third Games in a row, has been struggling with "on-going medical issues" alongside a further injury in the pool last week.

    He will still compete with fellow Olympic bronze medallist Dan Goodfellow in the synchronised 10m platform on Friday as the dives are less "dangerous".

    The Devon and Cornwall Police force has been graded as "good" following a re-inspection, it says.

    The force said, external it had been graded as good overall after a crime data integrity re-inspection by Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue services.

    It said the grade acknowledged a "substantial improvement made throughout the force in crime-recording accuracy and timeliness".

    Assistant Chief Constable Debbie Marsden said the grade was a "direct result of the hard work and commitment from officers and staff across the force to improve standards".

    She added that the force would "continue to look at the areas we can improve".

  16. Paedophile hunter groups 'will not solve online abuse'published at 07:49 British Summer Time 10 April 2018

    So-called paedophile hunters are being warned not to take the law into their own hands.

    A BBC Investigation has found Devon and Cornwall Police used evidence from the hunters to charge four suspects in 2017.

    But the force has warned vigilantes would "not solve the issue of online abuse or grooming of children", and said early referral to the police allowed them to safeguard victims.

    Evidence from such groups was used to charge suspects at least 150 times last year in England and Wales, a BBC investigation has found.

    A Freedom of Information request, sent to every police force in England and Wales, showed a seven-fold increase in the use of such evidence from 2015.

    Twenty-nine of the 43 forces approached (67%) provided data.

    Despite this, the National Police Chiefs Council said the groups' tactics presented "significant risks".

    Anti-hunting campaigners say an increasing number of South West landowners are considering legal action to prevent foxhounds trespassing on their land.

    A group called Hounds Off says in some cases where dogs are repeatedly disturbing wildlife, landowners are being left with no option but to apply for injunctions to ban hunts from their property.

    It's illegal to pursue a fox with more than two hounds but trail hunting remains a popular sport.

    Hounds Off say where problems occur they always advocate what they describe as polite firm communication with the hunts in question.

    However, in three cases across Devon and Somerset landowners have taken out injunctions when this approach hasn't worked.

  19. Dog dies after Newquay cliff fallpublished at 07:14 British Summer Time 10 April 2018

    A dog has drowned after falling into the sea from cliffs in Newquay, and its owners have been praised for not going into the water after it.

    The inshore lifeboat was launched at about 17:10 yesterday, and there were concerns people might be considering jumping in after the animal.

    The Newquay crew found the dog's body below the war memorial, to the eastern side of Towan Head.

    A spokesperson for the Newquay lifeboat said "We are sorry for the family's loss, but the father and son did the right thing by not going into the sea after their pet".

    Newquay Coastguard also responded to the call.
