    A dozen police officers were assaulted in Cornwall, Devon and Dorset over the first two days of the bank holiday weekend, according to a senior officer.

    Posting on Twitter on Monday morning, Ch Supt Glen Mayhew said officers from the Devon and Cornwall and Dorset forces, which share resources, responded to 2,300 emergency calls.

    He added that, during the time he was reporting on, officers had searched for 12 high-risk missing people, attended four incidents requiring specialist negotiators, and were called out to four firearms incidents.

    Tributes have been paid to a 59-year-old motorcyclist after he died in a crash in Hayle on Saturday.

    The family of Mark Wilkins described him as a "loving husband, a supportive and sensitive father, and a beloved friend".

    Devon and Cornwall Police were called to reports of a crash between a black Triumph Bonneville motorcycle and a silver Hyundai I30 car on the B3302 at Binner Bridge near Leedstown at about 22:45.

    The road was closed for seven hours while the investigation work took place.

    Mark's family said he was an "inspirational teacher and passionate drummer" and that his "two greatest loves were his motorbike and his music".

    "Those who knew him will remember him for his quick wit and wicked sense of humour," they added.

    Anyone with information about the crash is being asked to contact police via 101.

    A man has died after a fishing boat capsized off Plymouth, police say.

    A marine accident investigation is under way after the vessel capsized near the Mountbatten breakwater on Monday afternoon.

    Lifeboats, police, coastguards and an air ambulance were called to the scene after the 20ft (6m) vessel was reported to have got into difficulty at about 12:55.

    It went over close to a busy beach where people were enjoying the bank holiday. One man was rescued and airlifted to hospital.

    Devon and Cornwall Police said they were "aware of the death" of a man "following the capsizing of a boat off the coast of Plymouth".

    Officers said: "His next of kin have been informed and police are assisting with producing a file for the coroner."

    They added that the Marine Accident Investigation Branch was leading an investigation into the capsizing.

    Police in Plymouth have seized two homemade knife-style stabbing weapons from a teenager in Plymouth who told officers he "didn't see a problem with them".

    The weapons, seized on Monday night, comprised of pieces of broken CDs with serrations, and with handles fashioned from material and elastic bands.

    One officer from Crownhill Police said: "These are offensive weapons and, correct me if I am wrong, would serve only one purpose."

    Devon and Cornwall's cricket sides remain in with a chance of making the final stages of the Minor Counties Twenty20 tournament.

    In their first matches of the season, both South West sides won two and lost two of their games in their group.

    Devon and Cornwall played one another in two games on Sunday in Truro to open their season: Cornwall winning one by 41 runs, thanks in part to five wickets for Matthew Rowe; and Devon winning the other by four wickets as Gary Chappell hit 44.

    On Monday, Devon took on Dorset in Sidmouth.

    They lost their opener by 36 runs after a poor batting performance before recovering to win their second game by 30 runs as Alex Barrow impressed, hitting 93 off just 59 balls.

    Meanwhile, Cornwall registered a win and a loss against Wales in Newport - the home side beating the Duchy by five wickets before they bowled out Wales for 112 in their second game.

    They made their target with the loss of just one wicket as Thomas Rowe got 62 not out and Peter Trego 40 not out.

    Mountbatten capsize and rescue

    A marine accident investigation is under way after a fishing boat capsized off Plymouth on Monday, resulting in a man who had been on board being taken to hospital.

    Lifeboats, police, coastguards and an air ambulance were called to Mountbatten breakwater after the 20ft (6.1m) vessel was reported to have got into difficulty at about 12:55.

    It went over close to a busy beach where people were enjoying the bank holiday.

    One man was rescued and airlifted to hospital. His condition is not known.

    Coastguards said attempts were being made to recover the boat, which was left on its side.

    The Plymouth Coastguard Rescue Team said, external the RNLI secured the vessel after it was left "hard aground and not able to sink".

    Coastguards have also been assessing pollution risks in the area.

    The first dance of Flora Day in Helston has been making its way through the town after starting at 07:00, beginning a day of celebrations marking the arrival of spring.

    The tradition of Flora Day is thought to date back to pagan times when spring was welcomed in after the gloom of winter.

    About 100 chickens have died in a fire near Tiverton on Monday evening.

    They were killed when a farm shed near Chains Road, Sampford Peverell, caught alight at about 16:35.

    Three fire crews extinguished the blaze which left the 66ft by 26ft (20m by 8m) shed severely damaged, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said, external.
