    A man from Penzance will be sentenced for the murder of his ex-girlfriend next week.

    Dean Lowe, 33, was found guilty of murdering Kirby Noden by a unanimous verdict at Truro Crown Court earlier today.

    Mr Lowe will appear for sentencing at Exeter Crown Court on 15 May.

    A new bulk buy option will bring down the cost of parking at Cornwall Council car parks, external.

    Drivers can now bulk buy all day parking tickets through the JustPark App. , external

    In Truro, for example, bulk buying sessions reduce the cost from £8 per day to £2.19, while in Penzance, the cost is less than £1.

    Under the new offer, the daily rate is based on the cost of annual season tickets, but sessions bought in bulk can be used at any point during a two-year period.

    Two care homes in Devon have been rated as "outstanding" by the Care Quality Commission.

    Mallands Residential Care Home, external in Abbotskerswell near Newton Abbot, and Tracey House , externalin Bovey Tracey have both given the highest overall rating.

    At Mallands, the home's management received particularly high praise, with relatives and staff expressing "a very high level of confidence in the leadership" of the service.

    Similarly, at Tracey House, management "excelled in creating a culture where all staff members could provide outstanding care".

    Two pensioners say they're now living in a van in Cornwall because of a lack of support in finding social housing.

    Phil and Karen Halford, who are both in their 60s, had to move out of their privately rented home when the landlord wanted to sell and have spent a year bidding on social housing, without success.

    The couple say they need to stay in Perranporth to care for Karen's mother.

    In a statement, Cornwall Council said: "Even if a customer is not considered priority need under the homelessness legislation, external we can still work with customers to pursue their other housing options. Due to high demand and low supply, social housing is often not a realistic option and we work closely with the privately rented to find alternative accommodation".

    Twelve percent of the workforce in the South West have little or no rights at work, according to new research by the TUC., external

    About 342,000 workers in the region are on zero-hour contracts or similar, which the TUC says means they can be hired and fired at will.

    The union also says bosses are falsely labelling staff as self-employed, outsourcing work to agencies or using zero-hour contracts to drive down costs and avoid their employment and tax responsibilities.

    A four-year-old girl from St Austell has escaped serious injury after a golf ball narrowly missed hitting her head.

    It happened in the car park by Crinnis Beach after the ball had been hit from Carlyon Bay Golf Club.

    Now the girl's mother, Becci Coakley, is calling on the car park to have netting put around it.

    The golf club says this is by no means a regular occurrence, but Ms Coakley says it traumatised her.

    A British Army veteran from Cornwall has been told he will stand trial for attempted murder in connection with a fatal shooting in Northern Ireland in 1974.

    Dennis Hutchings' application for ‘abuse of process’ has been rejected by a judge in Belfast.

    The 77-year-old from Cawsand is charged in connection with the death of John Pat Cunningham, who was shot in the back as he ran away from an army patrol near the village of Benburb.

    Torbay Council spent more than £45,000 paying for so-called "paupers' funerals" in the last financial year.

    The authority conducted 25 Public Health Act funerals, external in 2017/18, costing £46,500.

    The most expensive was £2,039.

    Local authorities pay for funerals when a deceased's estate is too small to cover the cost.

    Nick Pannell, who chairs the Friends of Factory Row, external, a homeless hostel in Torquay, described each of these Public Health Act funerals as a "personal tragedy".

    Jackdaws recognise each other’s voices and respond in greater numbers to familiar birds, new research shows, external.

    The birds produce a harsh “scolding call” when they spot a predator, calling fellow jackdaws to mob the intruder and drive it away.

    University of Exeter researchers, external have discovered that each bird has a unique call, and the size of the mob depends on which bird calls the warning.

    The scientists played recordings of individual calls and found that the largest mobs assembled when birds heard the cry of a member of their own colony.

    Police would like to identify a woman following reports of a burglary in Torquay., external

    It happened on 24 March between 04:45 and 05:00 at a property on Devons Road.

    A window on the ground floor was broken and a handbag and purse taken from the property.

    Police would like to speak to the woman (pictured) in connection with the incident, and are asking anyone who recognises her to contact them, external.
