    Thousands of school children will be trekking across Dartmoor this weekend as part of the annual Ten Tors and Jubilee Challenge.

    But one team in particular has had personal challenges to conquer before they even reach the start line.

    Twelve teenagers from Ivybrdge Community College and Ratcliffe School at Dawlish - who are affected by a range of problems including poverty, anxiety, autism, low self esteem - are learning to work together to lead two Dartmoor ponies safely across the moors.

    The project, called Fresh Tracks, is the special equine assisted learning category of the Jubilee Challenge and was put together by the Dartmoor Pony Heritage Trust at the request of the British Army.

    Researchers are looking for people in Plymouth to take part in a study into whether exercise can help people stop smoking. , external

    They want to find out if encouraging smokers to keep fit is more effective at getting them to cut down on cigarettes than other methods.

    They're looking to recruit 900 people from four cities - Plymouth, Oxford, Nottingham and London.

    Half the volunteers will receive standard advice on reducing smoking; the others will receive up to eight face-to-face or phone conversations with a health trainer.

    Residents in a Cornish village will find out later whether they've managed to raise enough money to buy a derelict pub and turn it into affordable housing.

    So far, about 200 people have pledged £106,000 to buy The Old Ship Inn in Cawsand, external, which was destroyed by fire in 2013. Their target is £150,000.

    Campaigners say the pub can be turned into much needed flats for local families.

    The new owner of the Golden Hind replica in Brixham says the ship "isn't going anywhere".

    Sean Twomey, along with his wife Mary, bought the tourist attraction after hearing it was up for sale while on holiday in America.

    "We've lived in a dozen different countries and probably travelled to 50 or 60 different countries but we love Torquay and we love Devon," Sean said.

    "It's been our home for the past eight years. We're not going anywhere and the Golden Hind isn't going anywhere - not on our watch anyway."

    Sean added that his two young children "were in their element" when visiting it for the first time.

    Police are appealing for witnesses after a man approached a young girl near a Plymouth play park, external on Tuesday evening.

    The eight-year-old girl was playing on the field by the play park in Thurlestone Walk, Leighham, at about 18:00.

    She was approached from behind by a man who put one hand over her mouth and another around her waist, before she managed to escape and call for help.

    A light aircraft overshot a runway before overturning on to a road in Cornwall, it's been revealed.

    A report published by the Air Accident Investigation Branch , externalsaid the 61-year-old pilot and two passengers escaped the crash without injury, which took place on 9 December 2017.

    The report said that the aircraft, which had taken off from Oxford Airfield, was close to its maximum landing weight and the pilot had unintentionally allowed the aircraft to climb while he was waiting his turn to land.

    The plane landed too late at Bodmin Airfield, with witnesses saying it touched down about a quarter of the way down the runway.

    The wet grass surface and the runway's downhill gradient are also thought to have affected the landing.

    Drivers are being urged to "think about their mode of transport" when visiting the new Ikea store in Exeter -which opens today.

    Devon County Council said additional signs have been put in place on the roads leading into the site to reduce any traffic congestion.

    The city's Ikea is the 21st store to open in the UK.

    After decades of battling for funding, those hoping to discover a deep geothermal industry in Cornwall say they are closer than ever before.

    Experts suggest hot granite rocks miles below the ground could provide heat and power to thousands of homes in the county.

    Cornwall Council is poised to give the Eden Project £1.4m so it can unlock EU funding for its plans to produce power for itself and 7,000 local homes.

    Drilling is due to start in a few weeks time at a project at United Downs near Redruth.

    Sean and Mary Twomey with their two children

    One of Devon's best known tourist attractions finally has a new owner.

    The Golden Hind in Brixham is a floating replica of Drake's famous galleon but was not sold after it it went to auction last month.

    It has since been bought by a couple, Sean and Mary Twomey, who moved to Torquay eight years ago from Oxfordshire.

    They are already involved in tourism, running two backpacker hostels in Torbay.
