  7. Councillor gives 'unsatisfactory and patronising answers'published at 09:16 British Summer Time 16 May 2018

    Chris Baker
    Local Democracy Reporting Service

A senior councillor has been accused of giving vague, unsatisfactory and patronising answers to questions asked by opposition politicians.

Lib Dems Christine Carter, Mandy Darling, and Nick Pentney asked a full meeting of Torbay Council about one notorious eyesore, Crossways in Paignton (pictured); the Lymington Road car park, which may or may not be built on, and one long-running stalled development on an old B&Q site in Torre Hill Road in Torquay.

But they said they felt let down as the questions were fielded by senior Conservative Richard Haddock, who chairs the council's town centre regeneration programme board.

Mr Haddock said his answers were longer than usual and as detailed as possible, but added that "we could not discuss figures and facts because they came from a closed, confidential session".

  11. New NHS nursing home could be built in Foweypublished at 08:14 British Summer Time 16 May 2018

    Christine Butler
    BBC Radio Cornwall

The first NHS-run nursing home in Cornwall could be built in Fowey to replace a former community hospital.

The closure of the site two years ago, because of a lack of infection control, has angered local people.

Now the Cornwall Partnership Foundation Trust has drawn up a feasibility plan for a 30-bed nursing home to ease bed blocking at the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro.

    Fowey Community Hospital
    Quote Message

It is a trailblazing, hybrid model. There's going to be the need for more nursing homes. We've got this ageing population, and there will be a group that will continue to need nursing care. I think it's right that the NHS should be at the heart of providing that. Patients need to get out of hospital: they need nursing home placements and, therefore, if the NHS manages those, it has control over making sure those beds are available."

  17. Slapton residents want 'longer-term' plan for damaged roadpublished at 07:12 British Summer Time 16 May 2018

    Sophie Pierce

    Slapton coastal road

Villagers say the authorities need to start planning now for the total loss of the coastal road at Slapton in south Devon.

Half of the road is closed after being washed away in Storm Emma.

Devon County Council is likely to approve plans to repair it today.

    Road damaged in Slapton

But local businessman and parish councillor Charles Rogers said he had spoken to many people who were starting to accept that coastal erosion could not be battled forever.

He said the authority needed to start thinking longer-term.

    Quote Message

People weren't automatically saying: 'We must have it back.' I think we need to be thinking outside the box. Are we putting too much money into something that'll go again? Should we be putting that money into doing a feasibility study to widen the road between Stokenham and Chillington, or the way across country to Stanborough Camp?"
