  1. Cornwall hospitals trust boss chairman standing downpublished at 10:57 British Summer Time 23 May 2018

    BBC Radio Cornwall

The chairman of the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust (RCHT), Jim McKenna, is to stand down at the end of this month.

In a statement, Mr McKenna, who has been in the post for nearly 18 months, said the challenges of the role, which is not full-time, "required a much greater time commitment than its part-time status".

He said that the job, "particularly for a trust like RCHT which is in special measures", meant it "required a much greater time commitment".

He added that his role as an independent county councillor for Penzance would also suffer if he did not make a choice about his priorities.

  5. NHS staffing shortages 'not an isolated problem'published at 10:18 British Summer Time 23 May 2018

    Jenny Walrond
    Health Correspondent, BBC Spotlight

Bosses at Plymouth's main hospital, Derriford, which covers much of Devon and Cornwall, have apologised for distress caused to patients who have experienced long waits recently, and acknowledged that staffing issues have contributed to difficulties.

However, it's important to note that this is not an isolated problem in Plymouth.

We've heard similar stories of junior doctors having to care for a large number of patients in north Devon, and we've also heard of very long waits in accident and emergency at the Royal Cornwall Hospital near Truro.

The people who were affected by this said staff were great. Patients usually are full of praise for staff when they talk to us.

Their criticism is a lack of staff and shortage of resources.

The government said patients were benefiting from new funding for front line NHS services.

The local business improvement team is trying to find a new tenant for the premises on Market Street.

But do people in the town actually shop there?

    Derriford Hospital

Bosses at Plymouth's main hospital, which covers much of Devon and Cornwall, have apologised for distress caused to patients who have experienced long waits recently.

We reported earlier how a cancer patient said his pain was so bad as he waited two hours for medication at Derriford that he "would rather have been dead".

A Mebyon Kernow councillor Andrew Long also told how a friend faced up to a seven-hour wait in the Emergency Department on a recent Saturday evening after suffering a head injury.

University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust Chief Operating Officer Kevin Baber admitted the hospital had been "under extreme pressure" and had experienced staffing problems, but added that the situation had improved.

We pay great attention to safe staffing levels, but I can't deny that there are some gaps in rotas, and that some of that is beyond the hospital's control ... I'd like to think we've turned a corner in recent weeks and we've de-escalated the hospital considerably."

  10. Exeter parking to be reviewedpublished at 09:06 British Summer Time 23 May 2018

    Daniel Clark
    Local Democracy Reporting Service

Councillors have backed a review of parking demand and residents' parking policy across Exeter.

An Exeter Highways and Traffic Orders Committee meeting on Friday heard independent auditors had found no significant concerns over current processes, with permit compliance at 84%, while only 4% of cases were of people abusing the system. Those who didn't comply had permits cancelled.

But they agreed a review of parking demand across the city would be conducted to understand current capacity.

Elsewhere in the county, compliance in Newton Abbot was found to be at a 94% rate when an audit was carried out in January, and an audit is due to be carried out in Totnes and Barnstaple to check on compliance later in the year.

A Cornwall Councillor has criticised a lack of resources at Plymouth's main hospital at Derriford.

We told you earlier about one cancer patient describing how his pain was so bad as he waited two hours for medication at Derriford that he "would rather have been dead".

In a separate incident, Mebyon Kernow councillor Andrew Long said he was told a friend he accompanied to its emergency department faced up to a seven-hour wait on a recent Saturday evening.

His injured footballer friend suffered a head injury which turned out to be a triple fracture to his cheekbone.

They originally went to Liskeard's minor injuries unit but were told to go to Derriford, where his friend was triaged after an hour-and-a-half and told he would have a seven-hour wait to see a doctor.

The injured man decided to go home and come back the next day, when he waited about three hours.

University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust has apologised for any distress.

The RNLI is encouraging people to stay calm and use the float technique

Lifeguards say that 18 people, all men, lost their lives around the South West's coast last year.

That was a fall from the previous year, which saw 33 fatalities.

The RNLI is urging anyone who finds themselves unexpectedly in cold water to stay calm and "float" rather than panic and fight the water.

The float technique should allow people to get over cold water shock while giving them time to breathe, and think calmly.

Its new report said enough water to meet the needs of 20 million people was lost through leakage every day.

It is to work with others to set up personal water consumption targets.

The study, the first major report on water resources in England, said population growth and climate change were the biggest pressures on a system that was already struggling.
