Part of a Devon police station saved from closure is set to be sold off, with the local town set to benefit from the sale with more cash for local policing.

Seaton Police Station was one of a number across Devon due to be closed as part of a £54m cost-cutting measure. However, the police commissioner's office has come up with a scheme that has given it a reprieve.

The station comprises of two properties - 76 and 78 Queen Street - but the plan will see police sell number 76, the building they own, while renting number 78 and moving all staff into one building.

A formal planning application to split the buildings has been submitted to East Devon District Council.

It is unclear yet how much money would be raised from selling the freehold on 76 Queen Street and how that would be reinvested.

The police station will also remain closed to the public, but the change of heart means that police will retain a base in the town.

    BBC Radio Cornwall

There are just five small abattoirs left in the county and they are having to conform to the same rules as the larger ones. They said such extra costs could be a threat to their livelihood.

Conservative South East Cornwall MP Sheryll Murray said she had set up a meeting with Environment Secretary of State Michael Gove next week to make that point.

    Quote Message

No-one is more concerned about animal welfare than the people that own these small abattoirs. You cannot use the same legislation for large abattoirs and impose it on small ones that are operating on a much less profit basis than the larger ones."
