    A cyclist has been taken to hospital after getting impaled on the handlebars of his bicycle, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service has said.

    It happened at about 12:45 on Newton Road in Torquay.

    A police officer on the scene reported the incident after the cyclist fell on to the road.

    Fire crews managed to release the cyclist who was taken to hospital with an upper thigh injury.

    The government is promising that Brexit will not change the protected status of Cornish pasties, despite claims the famous delicacy originated in Plymouth.

    Under EU-protected geographical status rules, external, a Cornish pasty must be made in the county of Cornwall and include a strict list of ingredients.

    But it was a Devon MP Luke Pollard, the Labour MP for Plymouth Sutton & Devonport, who raised the issue in the Commons.

    • The A30 westbound is blocked at the Chiverton Cross Roundabout due to an accident and debris on the road. Traffic is queuing.

    Teignbridge District Council says it will not be raising car parking charges in Newton Abbot and other major towns in the area, despite pressure on their services.

    Cllr Jeremy Christophers said the authority would not be ramping up its charges and pricing local shops out of the market.

    Meanwhile, the council says a £30m investment programme with private investors over the next five to 10 years is set to "transform" the centre of the town.

    The redevelopment is expected to see the historic 800-year-old cattle market close when the plans are approved.

    The first phase of the work is the £2m scheme to transform the "look and feel" of the Market Walk shopping centre, which should be complete in time for the autumn.

    The former chief executive of Teignbridge District Council was given a £264,000 pay-off when she left the council last year, new figures have revealed.

    Nicola Bulbeck left her role after an 11-year stint following the general election in June, with no details given for her departure or what her future plans were.

    Her leaving package was kept secret from the public and the council turned down a Freedom of Information request to release the figures.

    But now the council's draft statement of accounts reveals the total cost of her exit package was £264,000, and she was awarded £173,000 as "compensation for loss of employment".

    The figure has been criticised by senior Liberal Democrats as "appalling" but Conservative council leader Jeremy Christophers said they made the decision to get rid of the post in a bid to cut costs.

    Phil Shears, the father of 2017 Love Island star Jessica Shears, has been appointed as the council's new managing director.
