  6. Devon Hospital stars in WW1 dramapublished at 18:20 British Summer Time 22 June 2018

    BBC Radio 4

The Seale Hayne venue near Newton Abbot played a remarkable role in treating World War One soldiers suffering from shell shock - and is the setting for BBC Radio 4's latest series of Home Front.

The series dramatises the real life Dr Arthur Hurst, who pioneered cures for shell shock, or 'war neuroses' as he preferred to call it, at Seale Hayne when it was a military hospital 100 years ago.

By the end of the war, 20,000 men were suffering from shell shock. Thousands more had experienced its symptoms during their military service.

  7. Warning over business fraudpublished at 18:12 British Summer Time 22 June 2018

    Miles Davis
    BBC News Online

Guernsey's Economic Crime Division (ECD) is warning people to be on their guard against mandate fraud after one local business reported losing £17,000 to fraudsters.

An ECD spokesman said mandate fraud, also known as invoice redirection fraud, is when someone impersonates a supplier and tells the customer they've changed their bank details and asks for their record to be updated.

Unknowingly the payment is then made to the newly provided details. The fraud often only comes to light when the real supplier chases payment.

The States of Guernsey was defrauded of £2.6m back in 2012 in a similar scheme.

FWS Carter and Sons wish to expand the existing farm shop as well as build a new dedicated classroom facility at the site on the A3052, between the Greendale Business Park and Crealy.

They say they would be making a significant investment in the farm shop, that already makes sales of around £100,000 a week, would create 30 new jobs, and expand on the shop which is a focal point to the rural community which it serves.

The farm shop already employs 68 people (56 full time and 12 part time), but the company says the new proposals would directly create 30 new jobs (8 full time and 22 part time) in documents submitted with a planning application to East Devon District Council.

Hundreds took to social media, or wrote to their local councillors, complaining that TOR2 weren't collecting their rubbish on time.

The council's now negotiating with the Kier Group - which has a majority shareholding in TOR2 - to decide whether or not to take full control of it.

Steve Darling, the leader of the Liberal Democrats on the council, says it's a step in the right direction.

    Quote Message

The council will be entering into negotiations to see if there are any hidden nasties and it will then decide how to better manage the contract, should someone else run it or should it come in-house.

  14. West Devon parking charges to increasepublished at 15:24 British Summer Time 22 June 2018

Most council run car parks in West Devon are to increase charges by 50p, from £2 to £2.50 per day.

West Devon Borough Council has held a consultation on the matter, and concluded the rise is necessary to effectively deliver the parking services.

It is the first increase for five years.

The pay and display charges will come into effect from Monday 2 July. The full list of new car parking charges can be viewed here, external.

    Quote Message

When making a decision such as this one, we have to take into account the public realm surrounding the car parks and the services in those realms, like street cleansing, public toilets, and ground maintenance. All of these services are an added cost to the running of the car parks and, unfortunately as those costs have risen over the years, we now need to increase our car parking charges to make sure that we can continue to provide a high standard of parking services to our residents.”

  16. Creditors back plans to close Plymouth House of Fraserpublished at 14:30 British Summer Time 22 June 2018

    BBC Business News

Creditors have backed department store chain House of Fraser's plans to close more than half its stores, including its Plymouth shop.

Earlier this month the retailer announced plans to shut 31 stores to offset financial difficulties.

Some 250 jobs in Plymouth are thought to be affected by the closure of one of the longest-standing stores in the city's retail community.

High Street landlords were unhappy with the plan as they will have to shoulder the burden of financial losses, but they were outvoted.

The decision to accept the rescue plan means the 169-year-old business avoids going into administration.

  18. Jersey's immigration rates nearly double UKpublished at 14:00 British Summer Time 22 June 2018

    Chris Quevatre
    BBC News Online

Jersey's population is growing at a faster rate than the UK, new figures show.

It's estimated more than 105,500 people call the island home - an increase of nearly 20% since 2000, compared to 10% in the UK.

The figures also show there were 100 more births than deaths in the island last year - and 1,200 more people came to the island, than left.

    GraphImage source, Statistics Jersey

Statistics Jersey said that of the 1,200 net inward migration in 2017, approximately 400 were licensed workers and their dependents, while 800 were registered workers and their dependents.

Jersey's government was accused of failing to control the island's growing population during the recent election.

The States is yet to agree on a proposed immigration policy, which includes plans for time-limited work permits, criminal record checks and photos on registration cards.
