    Quote Message

The trust has faced a number of challenges over a very long time. Not long after I was appointed it was put into ‘special measures’. The staff have worked tirelessly since then on the huge job of making the necessary improvements. Over the past couple of years I have recruited a completely new leadership team and have significantly improved relationships with the wider health and care system so that all of our partner organisations are now working much more effectively together for the citizens of Cornwall.

    Quote Message

We have made a lot of improvements and have been able to turn around our response times, particularly for urgent and emergency care, and we are now turning our attention to planned elective care. I am confident that we have put in place the foundations for the trust to move out of special measures and so I believe this is a good time for me to hand over to a new chief executive who can build on the work that has been done since I have been here."

Curator of Birds Jo Gregson said: "We don't want to make the birds abandon the nests. We'll find out in time."

To attract a female, the male performs a variety of mating rituals, such as preening, shaking and head rubbing.

After a successful courtship, pairs remain together, sharing parental responsibilities for the young.

  9. Paignton Zoo is getting a dragon - but no Khaleesipublished at 10:34 British Summer Time 4 July 2018

A six-year-old female Komodo dragon will be making Paignton Zoo its new home after growing up in Barcelona.

It's just the dragon, though. Khaleesi, mother of dragons from Game of Thrones, remains purely fictional.

There are currently 14 Komodo dragons in the UK - eight males and six females - but dragons are only kept as a pair for breeding, according to senior keeper Dr Katy Upton.

She said: "They are sometimes raised in groups from youngsters. However, again there can be issues with competition for food and aggression between individuals."

So while a dragon might be coming from the south to the shores of England, it's unlikely there will be a fight for a throne.

For those of you that don't watch Game of Thrones - I apologise.

  13. Scientists make breakthrough in Asian hornet trackingpublished at 10:01 British Summer Time 4 July 2018

    Rob England
    BBC News Online

Scientists have made a breakthrough in the fight to stop the spread of Asian hornets.

    Asian hornet and tracker

Last year, a team from the University of Exeter based in Cornwall travelled to Jersey and France to test electronic radio tags, which they attached to the invasive species in their nests.

The aim of the government-backed initiative was to find a fast, efficient way of tracking the hornets so nests can be disposed of.

They are a predatory species which feed on honey bees and other pollinating insects, damaging local populations.

Professor Juliet Osbourne, from the university, said finding nests early, was "vital" to stop the hornets "colonising the UK".

Asian hornets have been seen in Spain, France, the Channel Islands and the UK, including in Devon.More on this story:
