Her mother Kate Pearson says she and her husband "were stunned and shocked into silence".

She said: "My husband and I looked at each other and thought, 'We need to get her to A&E and get her checked out'.

"We took the needle with us to show the doctor, and also to get it disposed of safely, because I wasn't going to put it in a bin."

  5. 'Marmite' building gets go-ahead for new side accesspublished at 17:56 British Summer Time 3 September 2018

    Richard Whitehouse
    Local Democracy Reporting Service

A councillor said he would rather see a "Marmite building" in the centre of Truro demolished than altered from its architect's original design.

Bert Biscoe spoke out against plans to alter a building in Boscawen Street, which its owner wants to alter so that upper floors can be brought back into use.

Loadace Ltd, the owner of the building - which is currently home to TUI travel agents - said that if planning permission was not granted to provide a new entrance to the upper floors then they would be forced to shut them completely.

Windows would also be added to the upper levels of the building

However, despite Mr Biscoe's plea to protect the 1960s building, Cornwall Council's central sub-area planning committee approved the plans by eight votes to six.

The upper floors of the building have been left vacant for almost 40 years because there is no independent access to them.

There are also no windows in the upper floors, as it was originally built as a book storage area for WHSmith.

  7. Affordable housing plan approved despite parish oppositionpublished at 17:48 British Summer Time 3 September 2018

    Richard Whitehouse
    Local Democracy Reporting Service

A housing association and a parish council have been praised for working together to bring new homes to a village.

Ocean Housing had applied for planning permission to build 17 homes in St Newlyn East, five of which will be affordable.

The association had originally wanted to build 27 homes on the site next to Tinners Croft and Trewithen Parc.

But after the parish council raised objections they brought forward new plans, cutting the number of homes.

However, despite that the parish council still raised an objection to the plans due to the proposed access to the development, which it said was unsuitable, and also raised concerns about parking in the area.

Cornwall Council's central sub-area planning committee granted approval to the plans as there had been no objections from the council's highways officer.

  10. New Plymouth road work to go aheadpublished at 16:57 British Summer Time 3 September 2018

    Ed Oldfield
    Local Democracy Reporting Service

Work is set to start on diverting telephone, water and power supplies ahead of the main construction work on the £38m Forder Valley Link Road project in Plymouth.

City councillors are being advised to get on with ordering the utilities work which needs to be done ahead of construction to take advantage of a discount.

The proposed 1km (0.6-mile) road will create an additional route from the east of the city to the north, avoiding the often heavily congested Manadon roundabout and A386 Tavistock Road. It is also to include new walking and cycling routes.

It will link Forder Valley Road and Novorossiysk Road to William Prance Road in Derriford and was given planning permission in July.

The city council said the new road would cut journey times and unlock land in the north of the city for development, where 4,300 homes are planned over the next 15 years.

Initial works are expected to be carried out by the end of the year, with the main construction getting under way in January or February and taking around two years.

The Department for Transport has earmarked £22.56m towards the £37.89m scheme and Highways England has awarded £4.47m, which will cover the utilities work.

He was not armed and said that he had a large stick which may have looked like he was holding a sword. This has since been discarded. Police gave advice to the man over his conduct and then gave him a lift to the local train station."

The company is also proposing a "first of a kind" plan to offer customers a stake in the business from 2020, and the prospect of meetings where customers can cast votes.
