    A waste recycling centre in Exeter destroyed in a major fire last year will be rebuilt.

    More than 100 firefighters were called to Devon Contract Waste at Marsh Barton on 1 March, 2017.

    It ripped through the building in 17 minutes.

    Plans to reinstate and rebuild the Enviro-Hub have been approved by Devon County Council officers under delegated powers.

    The site will continue to import about 75,000 tonnes of commercial and industrial waste each year.

    The rebuild is to take place in phases.

    A second Asian hornet nest has been destroyed in Fowey.

    It was found by the National Bee Unit, which has been investigating the area since the discovery of a nest in the town earlier this month.

    There has also been a single sighting of an Asian hornet in Liskeard.

    Work is ongoing to ensure there are no more nests in the area and members of the public are being encouraged to report any further sightings of Asian hornets.

    Torquay United have signed Bristol City striker Saikou Janneh on a month-long youth loan.

    The 18-year-old Gambian-born forward goes straight into the Gulls' squad for their FA Cup qualifying trip to Lymington Town on Saturday.

    "We feel he's ready to play in this type of football," Torquay manager Gary Johnson told BBC Sport.

    "I've watched him a lot of times this season. We need competition here, we need enough players performing to get us to the next level."

    There has been a small demonstration at Torbay Hospital over plans to privatise the property and estates of a healthcare trust.

    It's been organised by local trade unionist after the recent decision by the Torbay and South Devon Healthcare Trust to go into partnership with a private company.

    The group of about 15 people was asked to leave the hospital site after about 10 minutes but continued the protest outside the hospital boundary at Lowes Bridge.

    A woman has been taken to hospital with "minor injuries" after getting trapped under a tree in Exeter, firefighters have said.

    It happened at about 13:10 at the junction of Paris Street and Western Way.

    The woman, in her 30s, was freed by some tree surgeons who were in the area at the time, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service added.

    Plans for more than 100 new homes for a site on the edge of Okehampton have been submitted.

    In 2015, West Devon Borough Council planners gave the go-ahead for 375 homes, a primary school and a retail unit to be built on land north of Crediton Road.

    Detailed plans for 109 of those 375 homes have now been submitted.

    The 420-place primary school, a nursery and a children's centre have already been approved.

    Documents submitted with the application said the proposed development will produce "no adverse impacts".

  10. Holidaymakers 'tied up in mistaken identity burglary'published at 14:06 British Summer Time 21 September 2018

    Two holidaymakers were tied up and assaulted in an armed burglary in North Devon in a case of mistaken identity, police have said.

    It happened at a cottage in Welcombe, between 21:00 and 22:00 on 15 September.

    Det Con Ben Cartwright, from Bideford CID said: "We are currently of the belief that this was a case of mistaken identity and the wrong property and people were targeted by these two individuals.

    "The occupants were holidaymakers visiting the area from Hampshire."

    Police have described the suspects as two black men wearing balaclavas who had regional accents from the West Midlands.

    Phones and cash were stolen before the suspects fled the area.

    Both victims have been left shaken but not seriously hurt.

    New figures show the cost of a basic cremation in Bodmin is the 16th highest in the UK at £999.

    Prices vary across Cornwall with a basic cremation in Camborne costing £850 while one in Truro will set you back just £630.

    The figures, released by Urns for Ashes, reveal the average cost of cremation across the whole of the UK is £738.

    The rate has risen in the past 12 months by 5.49% in Bodmin, 6.54% in Camborne and 2.61% in Truro.

    A spokesman for Urns for Ashes said the cremation rate "has picked up in the last 10 years, along with the price".

    "This, we believe, is in part to the rising cost of funerals. It is becoming a lot more expensive to bury the deceased and this has caused a rise in not just normal cremations, but also cheaper cremation services."

    A woman has been left "shaken" after three men attempted to shoplift from a fuel station she was working in, police have said.

    It happened on Wolseley Road in Plymouth at about 20:40 on Thursday.

    Officers said the men became "abusive" when challenged by the woman and "pushed a box of electrical items at the cashier".

    They then left on motorcycles.

    Anyone with information is asked to contact Devon and Cornwall Police via 101.

    On the A38 near Liskeard at the Moorswater Junction, the road is now clear after an earlier accident where a car crashed into a hedge.

    Devon and Cornwall Police said there was "debris and diesel" on the road which was partially blocked to allow a clean-up to take place.

    No-one was injured and the car has been removed, officers added.
