With the UK’s exit date in just months and with little progress having been achieved to date, it is foreseeable that as part of the British Chambers of Commerce, we may need to intervene even more forcefully in this debate to represent the interests of chamber business communities across the United Kingdom at a crucial moment in the negotiations.

  11. Plans for new cladding on Plymouth tower blocks approvedpublished at 08:29 British Summer Time 21 September 2018

    BBC Radio Devon

Plans for a new non-combustible external wall covering for tower blocks in Plymouth have been approved by the local council.

Housing association, Plymouth Community Homes (PCH), said work can now start to remove and replace the existing cladding panels at the Mount Wise Towers in Devonport.

The towers failed government safety tests after it was revealed cladding on them was made of similar material to that on Grenfell Tower.

The total cost of works at the towers is estimated to be about £14.5m.

PCH has submitted a bid to the government for the money after it said it would fully fund the works., external

We're delighted the council has approved our plans for the towers because it means we can continue with the works we promised our residents, including work which is under way to install sprinklers and now removing and replacing the cladding.

    Nuclear submarine at Devonport

MPs are warning the infrastructure for supporting the Royal Navy's fleet of nuclear submarines is no longer fit for purpose.

The Commons Public Accounts Committee says past decisions to delay maintenance at the MoD's 13 nuclear sites have created a "ticking time bomb".

Over the next 10 years, the Ministry of Defence is expected to spend £51bn maintaining and replacing the fleet.

But the committee says previous incorrect assumptions mean it does not have the berthing space it needs at Devonport, where maintenance and "defuelling" of the submarines is carried out.

Ellie's death had a devastating impact on her family and now dad Peter wants to raise awareness about brain tumours and the lack of funding for research.
