    An expert in sustainable farming from Devon is calling on the government to support small-scale growers who could increase the country's food production after Brexit.

    Proponents of agroecology, where various crops are grown alongside one another, say it's more natural than intensive farming methods.

    They'd like to see more financial help for small holders who currently don't qualify for payments.

    Head teachers from schools in Devon and Cornwall will join about 1,000 colleagues from around the country in London today, to demand extra funding for schools.

    They will meet in Parliament Square before delivering a letter to No 11 Downing Street, amid concerns over work conditions and overcrowded classrooms.

    The heads quote the Institute of Fiscal Studies' claim that per pupil funding has fallen 8% in real terms since 2010.

    We're having to cut courses, we're having to cut support services within schools, we've got massive pressure around budgets for our most vulnerable youngsters and those with special educational needs and disabilities. It's having a huge impact on the daily lives our our students."

    The government says school funds will rise to a record £43.5bn by 2020 and ministers argue a new funding formula will bring more cash to schools.

  3. Two rescued from overturned car in North Devon

    Two people were rescued from an overturned car after it crashed in North Devon, a fire service has said.

    It happened at about 18:55 on Thursday on the B3231 at Down End near Croyde.

    The car had landed on its side after the incident which involved no other vehicles, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service added.

    Crews from Braunton and Barnstaple managed to free the first casualty before the second was released about 20 minutes later.

    Both people were taken to hospital. Their injuries are unknown.

  8. No electricity from waste plant due to 'broken turbine'

    Cornwall's £141m waste-to-energy incinerator hasn't been producing any electricity in recent months because of technical problems.

    The plant - which opened last year in St Dennis - should create enough electricity from burning rubbish to power the equivalent of 21,000 homes.

    Suez, which runs the plant, says a broken turbine is being fixed and it will be back in service soon.

  9. Royal Navy engineers celebrate engineering campaign

    Royal Navy engineers are being celebrated at a special event held at HMS Raleigh.

    It is part of ‘The Year of Engineering’ government campaign to increase awareness and understanding of engineering careers among young people aged 7-16.

    The industry is struggling to recruit future talent, the campaign has said.

    Around 100 engineers from the past will meet with the latest recruits and take part in the passing-out parade.

  10. House targeted with arson attacks for three years

    A property in Plymouth has been subjected to several arson attacks, police have said.

    The property on Southway Drive was last attacked at around 02:00 on 27 September with an attempt to light part of the gas box outside.

    Police have said the property has been victim to several attacks over the last three years.

    Det Con Paul Brimicombe said the “current occupants have only recently moved in”.

    He said: “The actions from the culprits are incredibly dangerous and need to stop immediately.”

    It is believed the recent attacks are a case of “mistaken identity”.

    Police are appealing for witnesses and anyone who has CCTV in the area.

  11. Father riding late daughter's bike will finish charity cycle

    A Cornish man is due to finish his 200 mile (321km) cycle on his daughter’s tiny pink bike.

    Peter Williams, from Penzance lost his 7-year-old daughter Ellie to a brain tumour.

    He set off from Bristol Children’s Hospital last Friday to raise money for a charity that wants to improve research funding into the disease.

    He is due to reach Land’s End this afternoon.

    Mr Williams said: “She would have thought I was a bit bonkers doing it.”

    Brain tumours are the biggest cancer killer of children and adults under 40 and part of Mr William's mission is to highlight the "lack of funding" for research.
