  3. Environment 'right on the edge', swimmer Pugh warmspublished at 17:32 British Summer Time 1 October 2018

    BBC Politics

Endurance swimmer Lewis Pugh has said that the environment is "right on the edge", warning that the UK's coastline is awash with plastic.

Mr Pugh completed the English Channel challenge in August, swimming from Land's End in Cornwall to Dover in Kent in 49 days.

Speaking at the Conservative party conference in Birmingham, he said: "The first thing that struck me is just how incredibly beautiful the coastline is here in the United Kingdom. It's incredibly beautiful. But a second thing that struck me was how little wildlife I saw."

"Every single beach I just saw this plastic everywhere. It's like we've hoover-ed up the fish and thrown in the plastic".

He concluded: "It is very, very clear to me that we have now entered the era of big consequences. Our environment is changing very, very quickly. Our environment now is right on the edge."

  4. Academy schools in BBC Panorama report seek new sponsorspublished at 17:27 British Summer Time 1 October 2018

    BBC Radio Cornwall

Five schools in Cornwall run by an academy trust are seeking new sponsors following allegations of financial misconduct on a BBC Panorama programme.

The Adventure Learning Academy Trust (ALAT) runs Liskeard Hillfort Primary School, Altarnun Primary in Launceston, Gulval Primary near Penzance, Tywaedreath School and the Fowey River Academy.

It was set up by multi-millionaire businessman Michael Dwan, who also set up a bigger trust - Bright Tribe - which runs 10 academies in England, from Colchester in the south east to Whitehaven in the north west.

Panorama reporters discovered ALAT received £300,000 of public money to install energy-efficient lighting at Fowey, and questions were raised over whether the work was ever completed.

The programme said that, in total, Mr Dwan's various companies were paid £8m for services by the two academy trusts.

Mr Dwan strongly denied any wrongdoing, and said the cost of providing £8m in work and services to the two trusts was £10.5m, so he actually made a loss.

The Cornwall trust is under new management, which told the BBC the schools were to be "re-brokered".

It is not clear whether the schools will all come under one new trust or whether they will split up and become part of other academy trusts.
