    It's been confirmed Billy Ocean is to perform at Let's Rock Exeter in 2019.

    The retro festival, external, which is held at Powderham Castle, celebrates all things 1980s pop.

    Other acts expected to perform on 29 June include: Belinda Carlisle, Hot Chocolate and Go West.

    The festival has been running across various parts of the UK since 2009.

    A motorcyclist who had to be airlifted to the Royal Cornwall Hospital with serious injuries, was on his way home having just bought an engagement ring.

    Shane Bamford, 45, was heading home on the A394 at Longdowns near Falmouth when a car pulled out in front of him, knocking him to the road.

    He fractured his collarbone and crushed a nerve in his arm.

    Shane said: “The only thing I can remember is all the stones flying everywhere and a paramedic shielding me. I saw Cornwall Air Ambulance overhead, but I didn’t think for a minute I’d be going on it. I was just thinking, where is the ring?”

    Paramedic Pete Storer was on board and said: “Shane had a couple of nasty fractures and was in pain, but his mind was obviously on the engagement ring. A police officer passed it to me in an evidence bag - I reassured him I didn’t let it out my sight.”

    Hospital staff then also conspired to help Shane keep the engagement ring away from his partner Tracy Snooks so he could keep the planned proposal a secret.

    He proposed to Tracy the following week.

    She said: “It would be easy for him not to be here and for all of this to be snatched away. We’re really lucky and we can’t thank everyone enough.”

    Shane has also paid tribute to the emergency services, and the Cornwall Air Ambulance, external in particular.

  3. Police investigation after cat 'shot number of times'published at 13:25 British Summer Time 1 October 2018

    Reports of a cat being shot "a number of times" in Plymouth are being investigated by police.

    Officers said a cat was shot between 27 September and 28 September in the Mount Gould area of the city.

    The pet's owner, Sarah Collins said she thought one-year-old Bruno had been hit by a car after he returned home covered in blood but a visit to the vets found he had two pellets in his eye socket.

    The cat lost the eye as a result of the incident.

    Anyone with information is being asked to contact Devon and Cornwall Police via 101.

    Meanwhile, a second cat owner has come forward to say their pet was hurt in a similar attack on the same street.

    Sylvia French, of Mirador Road, said her cat Marley was shot in the leg about two weeks ago.

    Ms French said the attacks were "very worrying"...

    At Tedburn St Mary, on the A30, one lane remains closed Exeter-bound between the Woodleigh Junction and Fingle Glen after a multi-vehicle crash required two air ambulances to land on the road.

    Traffic is queuing in the area.

    Devon and Cornwall Police said three people have been injured in the crash which involved two vehicles.

    The government has announced it's to continue subsidising flights between Newquay and London, external for at least the next four years.

    Ministers first intervened in 2014 when they were told the airport - and its services to Gatwick - were under threat.

    But the Transport Secretary Chris Grayling told the Conservative Party conference that regional airports play a "vital role"...

    The service will see daily flights between the two airports, with three return flights on weekdays and two per day at weekends.

    Operated by FlyBe, the service will start this month.

    Three people have been injured after a multi-vehicle crash on the A30, police have said.

    It happened at Tedburn St Mary between the Woodleigh Junction and Fingle Glen, heading eastbound, at about 10:30.

    Officers said it was believed two vehicles were involved in the crash and one overturned.

    One man is believed to have a broken collar bone and a woman has been left with a head and stomach injury.

    A third person is reported to be injured but the extent of their injuries are unknown at this time.

    The A30 is currently closed in both directions for two air ambulances to land, Devon and Cornwall Police added.

    Five branches of Barclays bank in Cornwall are due to close as a result of a "change in the way people bank", the bank has confirmed.

    The branches affected include:

    • Fowey - due to close 26 October 2018
    • Saltash - due to close 7 December 2018
    • Looe - due to close 14 December 2018
    • Padstow - due to close January 2019
    • Bodmin - due to close January 2019

    Michael Watts, community banking director for Barclays in Devon and Cornwall, said at the Padstow branch, the number of transactions had gone down in the last two years and "77% of our branch customers are also using other ways to do their banking, such as online or by telephone".

    He added that a decision to close a branch was not taken lightly and hoped the "availability of our other Barclays branches across Cornwall including Wadebridge, Newquay and St Austell ... will help to ease the transition for our customers".

    "We were disappointed with the refereeing a couple of weeks back and we're certainly disappointed today."

    A meeting is due to be held on Monday to decide whether controversial plans to build on a large section of a popular park in Westward Ho! can go ahead.

    Torridge District Council said bringing housing on to 40% of the site at Avon Lane - which has been a park for more than 80 years - and redeveloping the play facilities was "responsible and sustainable".

    But 4,000 people have signed a petition against the plans and want councillors to veto the redevelopment.

    A petition of such a size means the full council has to hold a debate.

    The council added the plans had been much debated following an extensive consultation with the community, and as much of the site as possible will be retained for community use.
