  8. Motorcyclist musician died in 'unlucky' collisionpublished at 11:39 Greenwich Mean Time 14 January 2019

    BBC News Online

A drum teacher died in "deeply unfortunate" circumstances after his motorcycle collided with a car on a foggy night, according to a coroner.

Mark Wilkin, 59, from Cury, near Helston, was on his way home from a gig with his band, Head Smashed in Buffalo Jump, travelling on the B3302 near Leedstown on 5 May at about 22:45 at the time of the accident.

An inquest in Truro heard the father-of-two had gone onto the wrong side of the "winding country road", possibly because of the fog and a lack of visible road markings.

Assistant coroner Andrew Cox said Mr Wilkin tried to correct his road position when he saw a silver Hyundai coming towards him but that caused him to lose control and fall from the motorcycle, breaking his pelvis.

The inquest heard the pelvic injury caused catastrophic internal bleeding and he died of multiple injuries after the collision.

"He has been unlucky, this is not a busy lane," said Mr Cox. "If he had got himself on the wrong side of the road and there hadn't been a car coming ... none of this would have happened."

He concluded Mr Wilkin's death had been due to a road traffic collision.

  11. Football: 'Gulf in class' as Truro are thumped at Stockportpublished at 11:07 Greenwich Mean Time 14 January 2019

    Brent Pilnick
    BBC Sport

Truro City manager Leigh Robinson says Stockport County were too good for his side as they lost 5-0 at the National League North side in the FA Trophy.

City were already without a number of regular faces in their squad, but fell behind after just three minutes.

Robinson told BBC Radio Cornwall there was "unquestionably ...a gulf in class out there".

    Quote Message

Our boys gave it what they could, but you saw an inexperienced side in us and a truly hardened, mature side in Stockport who had an awful lot of quality. We probably won't play against a side as good as that again this season, so we have to crack on with our business of staying in the league, which as it stands, we're doing quite a good job at."

Devon and Cornwall Police have announced the force is introducing spit and bite guards (SBGs) with immediate effect.

The transparent mesh fabric hoods are used to prevent those arrested from spitting or biting officers.

The force said that 216 members of its staff were spat on between 2016 and 2017.

But civil liberties groups have called the mesh hoods placed over suspects' heads "dangerous and degrading".

Supt Ian Drummond-Smith said that they would protect 999 staff.

    Quote Message

Biting and spitting is an atrocious act and the new SBGs will provide additional protection to help keep everyone safe. Too often, officers, security guards or NHS staff are spat upon, not just with saliva but also with blood and other body fluids."
