    Two baby red ruffed lemurs have been born at Paignton Zoo.

    Their mother, 17-year-old Tack, gave birth to the twins on 22 April.

    All red-ruffed lemur babies are born in April and it always took a few weeks before the mother decided to take the babies outdoors, the zoo said.

    Zoo spokesman Phil Knowling said that, so far, Tack had been "attentive" and "staying close" to the twins.

    Red ruffed lemurs (Varecia rubra) are critically endangered. They live in small family groups; the females defend the territory and are dominant over males.

    Police in Plymouth say they have had several reports of telephone scams in the Stonehouse area of the city recently.

    Officers reported that "sadly, most reports are of people losing in excess of £4,000".

    In one case in Plymouth recently, one victim also lost more than £8,000 "in a few weeks" during a longer-term scam, police said.

    Officers added that genuine callers from the police or HM Revenue & Customs "will never call you for money".

    Anyone who was suspicious of such calls should "go to your bank. Tell the truth. Ask them the verify things for you," they added.

    At least two people have sustained serious injuries after a crash in Cornwall, police say.

    Emergency services were called to the scene after what a described by officers, external as a "serious two-car crash" near Chiverton Cross in Cornwall.

    Police, fire and ambulance services were called just before 13.30 following the collision on the B3277.

    A number of road closures are in place.

    The B3277 is closed between St Agnes and Chiverton Cross at the junction with Towan Cross, up to Three Burrows, Blackwater.

    A man has been taken to hospital after falling from the coast path near Mevagissey.

    Coastguards from St Agnes and Porthscatho were called to Port Holland at about 11:15.

    The man was taken to the Royal Cornwall Hospital near Truro by ambulance with a suspected fractured ankle.

    The family of a missing woman has been told about the discovery of a body in Axminster on Friday.

    Police were called to Yawl Cross at about 11.50 on 21 June following reports of a body being discovered in the area.

    Emergency services attended the scene and found the body of a deceased woman, police said.

    The family of 48-year-old Karen Wyatt, who had been missing from Axminster, had been informed, they added.

    This death is not currently being treated as suspicious and a file is being prepared for the coroner.

    Bishop Chris Goldsmith is leaving the Diocese of Truro to head the Church of England's Ministry Division, he has announced.

    In a letter to diocesan clergy and lay colleagues, external, the Bishop of St Germans, who joined the diocese in 2013, said it was an announcement he never expected to make.

    He said there was no other role within the Church of England for which he would have considered leaving the diocese. He is due to take up his new post in September.

    The diocese said the bishop would "play a lead role in supporting the continuing renewal of ministry throughout the Church of England as the church looks to increase the scale and diversity of those called to both lay and ordained ministries".

  14. Fire crews rescue woman from flipped car in Devonpublished at 14:23 British Summer Time 24 June 2019

    A woman was rescued from a car which flipped off the roadway onto its side and collided with a building in Horrabridge.

    Fire crews from Tavistock, Yelverton and Crownhill went to Walkhampton Road at 10.40 and used hydraulic rescue equipment to release the woman.

    She was left in the care of paramedics.

    The family of a five-year-old girl from Devon with a rare cancer is hoping to send her to America for treatment.

    Cayla Jones, from Cullompton, was diagnosed with stage four neuroblastoma, external last year.

    The condition affects children and babies and commonly occurs in one of the adrenal glands above the kidneys, or in the nerve tissue that runs alongside the spinal cord. It can spread to other organs such as bone marrow, bone, lymph nodes, liver and skin.

    It affects about 100 children a year in the UK, the NHS said.

    She's undergone chemotherapy, radiotherapy and immunotherapy.

    Cayla has been offered a pioneering vaccine in New York. The treatment will cost about £200,000.

    The organisation that oversees Cornwall's fisheries has said it will not bring in a by-law to increase the size of the mesh of fishing nets, that some anglers say could save sea bass from serious decline.

    Cornwall's Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority committee rejected the idea again last week, as it did in February.

    It said it will continue to consider the idea over the next few years as part of a longer-term strategy.

    A male who fell from a cliff in Torbay in the middle of the night has been rescued after emergency services worked together to retrieve him, coastguards say.

    Torbay Coastguard said on Facebook, external that emergency services were called to cliffs at Corbyn's Head at about 02:05 after a "casualty was found lying injured on the beach below".

    They said the male was put in a basket stretcher and later tended by an ambulance crew.

    RNLI Torbay reported the rescue involved 30 people from five different teams from the RNLI, police, fire service, NHS and the coastguard.

    Torbay Coastguard said: "This was another great example of multi-agency working together."

  19. 'Misery' for people living next to Brixham jetty work sitepublished at 11:57 British Summer Time 24 June 2019

    People living beside the construction site of a new £1m shellfish jetty in Brixham have said their lives are being made "a misery" by constant noise.

    The jetty is being built to service a large mussel farm off the coast nearby.

    The Torbay Development Agency said the work had been intensified to complete it quicker, but the working hours would be restricted from 08:00 to 18:00 Monday to Saturday.

    It added that it expected the marine pile installation to be completed this week.
