  5. Spaceport 'will not have high impact on carbon footprint'published at 11:09 British Summer Time 28 August 2019

    BBC Radio Cornwall

Research by scientists at the University of Exeter says that a proposed horizontal launch spaceport at Cornwall Airport Newquay is not expected to impact significantly on Cornwall’s overall greenhouse gas emissions.

The result is good news for Cornwall Council, which owns the airport, and says it is committed to making Cornwall carbon neutral by 2030.

The Spaceport Cornwall Carbon Impact Assessment was commissioned by the council to inform plans to offset any carbon impact from the spaceport as part of its commitment to making Cornwall’s economy zero-carbon by 2030.

Horizontal satellite launches would see rockets dispatched to space from under the wing of a converted Virgin jumbo jet in high orbit (pictured).

The launch vehicle then returns to the airport and is able to be reused repeatedly.

    Newquay Airport

The study found that total annual emissions from Spaceport Cornwall would be between 0.04% and 0.1% of Cornwall’s total carbon footprint, and concluded that this was "relatively low" in comparison to overall emissions.

There is expected to be one launch in year one, with up to no more than eight a year projected by 2025.

Satellite launch operators will be required to meet the carbon costs of operations through their launch fees.

Councillor Geoff Brown welcomed the report, but added bigger emissions problem was caused by vehicles on the roads.

He said: "To put it into context aircraft at the airport contribute 1.5% to total carbon footprint, but roads and our residential house holds contribute 22% each."

Teignbridge District Council planners are being recommended to approve plans to build 2.5km of new road that will cut across from the A382 to the A383, through the Houghton Barton development area.

A segregated route for cycles and pedestrians will be provided along the length of the road.

Devon County Council’s application is recommended for approval at next Tuesday’s planning meeting., external

    Dick Straughan
    BBC Radio Cornwall

People will get a chance to give their opinions on beach dog restrictions in Cornwall as the council launches a public consultation.

Cornwall Council currently has 48 public spaces protection orders (PSPOs) which apply restrictions at certain times of the year for dogs on beaches across the county.

The PSPOs have to be reviewed every three years and the current ones are due to expire next April, so the council is asking residents for their views, external before new restrictions are drawn up. The consultation is to run until 19 November.

In the survey, the council is asking whether more or fewer beaches should have restrictions, and whether there should be blanket start and finish dates for the restrictions, for example from 1 May to 30 September.

The authority added that it was also speaking to town and parish councils and beach owners ahead of the public consultation for their views.
