Chief Constable Sawyer was asked by a member of the media whether Davison was receiving treatment for mental health issues.

He said police would investigate this, but that "clearly this was an extraordinarily unusual" act by a human being.

Mr Sawyer said he could not say at this time whether or not mental health issues were involved.

He said the coroner would also be asked to investigate this.

Jake Davison held a licence for a firearm, Chief Constable Shaun Sawyer has said.

However, he would not confirm whether this was the weapon used in the shooting.

Eyewitnesses described the gun used as a pump-action shotgun, but police would not confirm if this was the case.

The weapon recovered from the scene will be forensically examined.

Chief Constable Sawyer continued by saying that eyewitnesses described the firearm used by Davison as a "pump-action" firearm.

He confirmed a firearm had been found at the scene and will be forensically examined, but that police are not yet describing the weapon as a "pump-action firearm" although "clearly multiple shots have been fired" during the six-minute period.

Mr Sawyer added there are 13 scenes and "potentially more scenes" and that members of the public were evacuated from the scene overnight.

He confirmed "five people of Plymouth have lost their lives overnight and Mr Davison himself, including a particularly young child".

Officers are not naming the victims at this time to protect their wider families, employers and others affected across the UK, he added.

Afterwards he aimed and shot at two local residents, a man and woman, who received significant but not life threatening injuries and are now being treated in hospital.

Mr Sawyer said Davison shot and killed a man in nearby parkland.

He then shot a woman in Henderson Place who later died at Derriford Hospital despite the best efforts of first aiders at the scene.

Eyerwitnesses then said the shooter turned the gun upon himself, the Chief Constable added.

He says armed and unarmed officers got to the scene at Biddick Drive within six minutes.

He confirms 22-year-old Jake Davison had killed a woman at an address, but says he won't reveal that address as officers are still contacting relatives of the deceased lady.

In videos posted online weeks before the shooting – and since removed by YouTube – the Plymouth gunman Jake Davison spoke of being “beaten down” and “defeated by life”, but compared himself to the Terminator.

He said he was socially isolated, struggled to meet women and made references to “incels” – the misogynistic online groups of “involuntary celibate” men, who blame women for their sexual failings and who have been linked to a number of violent acts around the world.

Signing off on the 11-minute video, which appears to be the last he posted, Davison said: "I know it's a movie but I like to think sometimes I'm the Terminator or something. Despite reaching almost total system failure he keeps trying to accomplish his mission."
