    The son of Andrea Daly, who died 10 years ago today following a house fire on Rochford Road in Southend, has spoken of how he tried to save his mother.

    Richard Daly, 30, was forced to jump out of the first floor window after his attempts to reach his trapped mother failed.

    "I tried to go to the door to pull the handle open. My hand was bubbling when I touched the handle. All I could hear was my mum screaming and bellowing. I realised I couldn't do anything.” he said.

    A report by an Essex preservation society on the future of the Jumbo Tower in Colchester has been delayed until the new year.

    The document by the Colchester and North East Essex Building Preservation Trust, external will spell out the costs of different proposals put forward for the tower at Balkerne Gate. 

    It's owned by poultry farmer Paul Flatman who bought it for £190,000 in an auction in 2014 - but it has remained unused since. 

  4. Man charged over Rayleigh fatal road crashpublished at 12:15

    We've just been told a man has now been charged with various motoring offences following a fatal road crash in Rayleigh earlier this year.

    Oliver King, who was 22-years-old, from Leigh-on-Sea, near Southend, died after the collision in Hockley Road on 25 January. 

    The accused man is due to appear at court next week.

    Crimestoppers says it's offering a reward of up to £10,000 for information to help catch those responsible for a house fire which killed a Southend mother-of-two 10 years ago.

    Andrea Daly, 40, died after a fire was started deliberately through the letter box at her home in Rochford Road on 10 November 2005.

    A spokesperson for the charity said: "This is an absolutely despicable crime that left two boys without their mum and a husband without his wife".

    A new supermarket in Walton is set to bring dozens more jobs to the area.

    Aldi has been given the green light to go ahead with its proposals for land at the former Martello Caravan Park off Kirby Road in the town. 

    Tendring District Council says it'll create around 40 new jobs. The company has also promised to improve nearby bus stops and create pedestrian and bicycle accesses.

    Keith Daly, 55, was in Lincolnshire, on the day of the fire 10 years ago when he was called at 04:00 and urged to return home. 

    "When I got to the hospital I was still in shock, I couldn’t comprehend what was going on. Both my boys were at the hospital with burns and shock. Then we were taken into a little room and told Andrea had died."

    Andrea Daly, 40, died as a result of inhaling smoke in Rochford Road on 10 November 2005. The fire was started through a letter box.

    Essex Police says those responsible are still at large and their motives for starting the fire are unknown.

    A Basildon woman who has lost 14st (89kg) in 18 months says the turning point for her weight loss came on a trip to Southend.

    Cheryl Blythe, now 33, began ballooning in weight after she became pregnant with her daughter at the age of 17. 

    Talking about her trip to the seaside town Ms Blyhe said: "I couldn't fit in some chairs because they were too small and I felt like everyone was staring at me the whole time."

    I’ve been finding out a bit more about the team standing in the way of Colchester United and a place alongside the Premier League clubs in the third round of the FA Cup.

    The U’s will host National League Altrincham in the second round at the beginning of next month. 

    They knocked out Barnsley at the weekend so have already caused one upset in this season’s competition. They are now five unbeaten and will come to Essex full of confidence.

    A morbidly obese mum from Basildon who turned down a gastric band operation has lost 14st (89kg) in 18 months.

    Cheryl Blythe was 31 when her GP told her she would be dead or confined to a wheelchair by 45 if she did not lose weight. 

    But, after rejecting weight-loss surgery 18-months ago in favour of eating healthy, the mother-of-two has shredded the pounds and is now down to 10st (63kg).

    A care organisation which assessed Essex pensioner Gordon Wilson with dementia shortly before he disappeared says it was in the process of working out a care package for him.

    The 82-year-old has been missing since he left his home in Leaden Roding on 25 October, after recently being diagnosed with vascular dementia.

    Essex Dementia Care, external's chief executive Debbie Davis met Mr Wilson a week before he disappeared, she said: "We were looking for ways to help him live life like we all do".

    Cliff Laysell, from Great Wakering, has been stranded at his hotel since his flight back to the UK on Saturday was cancelled. 

    "I feel dreadfully sorry for the staff here... One man was asking if he could get a visa in the UK. He even went to the extremes of offering to sell his child", Mr Laysell told BBC Essex.

    Another man has been arrested over an incident where shots were fired at unarmed police officers in Laindon last month, Essex Police say.

    No-one was injured and seven other men were later arrested after officers were called to the area of Arne Court and Vaughan Williams Road on 18 October. 

    The force says a man was detained in the early hours of this morning on suspicion of attempted murder and is now being questioned by officers.
