Essex Police, external are appealing for information after a man, in his 20s, was shot outside Kentucky Fried Chicken in Benfleet.
Officers say he was approached by two men outside the London Road restaurant at about 22:00 on Friday.
One fired what is believed to have been a shotgun before leaving in a blue VW Golf, which was later found burnt out in Burnt Mills Road in north Benfleet.
The victim managed to run back into the food outlet and was later treated in hospital for leg injuries which were not thought to be life-threatening.
An inquest into the death of a Polish man who was attacked in Harlow has heard the cause of death was a head injury.
Arek Jozwik, 39, was killed at The Stow on 27 August and six teenagers have been arrested and released on police bail as part of a murder inquiry.
The inquest in Chelmsford has been opened and adjourned until next week.
Essex Police originally thought the dead man was 40-years-old.
Polish ministers are due to visit the UK following Mr Jozwik's death and the attack on two other Polish nationals in Harlow on Sunday.

Southend boss Phil Brown says Anton Ferdinand's hamstring injury will be assessed and treated this week.
The defender (pictured during his introduction at Roots Hall in August) was taken off during Saturday's 1-1 draw at League One leaders Bolton and it's hoped he'll be fit enough for Saturday's game at Scunthorpe.
Brown said: "He said it tightened up - he hasn't pulled it or torn it. It needs strength and conditioning work - it's as simple as that.
"It's early days and I can't judge that one."

A senior Labour MEP has announced plans to stand down from the European Parliament, external later this year.
East of England Euro-MP Richard Howitt, who has been in the European Parliament for 22 years, said he is to become chief executive of the International Integrated Reporting Council, external (IIRC), which links companies with society, the environment and the wider economy.
Mr Howitt, as well as being the senior serving MEP for the East of England, is also the Labour spokesman on foreign affairs in the European Parliament.
He is also the Socialist and Democrat Group Human Rights spokesperson, the European Parliament Rapporteur on corporate social responsibility and the president of the All-Party Disability Rights Group, external of MEPs.

Essex Police, external said officers were talking to neighbours and reviewing any CCTV pictures as part of the murder inquiry following the death of a man in a fire in a flat on Colchester's Greenstead estate.
Officers said the 78-year-old victim in the Rochdale Way fire was pronounced dead just before 02:00 on Sunday.
Det Ch Insp Stephen Jennings said: "There are a number of circumstances at the scene and some accounts we've got from witnesses that give us cause and reasonable concern this may well have been deliberate.
"At the moment there's no suggestion that this is someone has randomly picked this address and randomly started this fire."

I visited the scene of the fire yesterday afternoon and took several photographs.
It has been extensively damaged, with broken windows at the front and rear and brickwork blackened by smoke.
Essex Police says it has not yet formally identified the 78-year-old man who died in the fire on Rochdale Way, Colchester.
The force said a post-mortem examination was due to take place today.
The man lived in a one-bedroom, ground-floor flat.
The fire started at about 01:15 yesterday and the man was carried out by fire crews, but paramedics could not save him, Essex Police, external said.
The 42-year-old woman being questioned on suspicion of the murder of a man in a fire in a flat in Colchester was arrested yesterday lunchtime at an address in the town.
Det Ch Insp Stephen Jennings (pictured in white) said: "We are looking to establish the exact cause of the blaze.
"The victim and suspect are known to each other.
"I would urge anybody that has any information that may help us establish the facts to contact my team, external as soon as possible."

A 42-year-old woman is still being questioned after a 78-year-old man was killed in a fire in a flat in Colchester.
Fire crews were called to the flat, on Rochdale Way in Greenstead, in the early hours of Sunday morning.
The victim, who has not been identified by Essex Police, died at the scene.
The woman was arrested yesterday on suspicion of murder.
